What is Balloon Sleeve Blouse

Balloon Sleeve blouse fashion illustration.

A balloon sleeve blouse is a fashion-forward piece that features sleeves with a voluminous, billowy shape, gathered at the wrist to create a rounded silhouette. This style adds a touch of drama and flair to any outfit, making it a popular choice for those looking to make a statement with their wardrobe. The balloon sleeve is wider than traditional sleeves, often with pleats or folds to enhance its puffed appearance, and can be found on various garments, from blouses to dresses.

Whether you’re crafting a DIY balloon sleeve top or seeking a balloon sleeved blouse for a chic look, this design is versatile, allowing for a U-neckline that can be worn on or off the shoulder, paired with a ruched waist for added style. It’s a trend with deep historical roots, harking back to the medieval and renaissance periods, and continues to be a beloved choice for its bold and beautiful aesthetic.

To make this top, you’ll need:
  • 1.5 meters of lightweight fabric for the main body
  • 0.5 meters of stiffer fabric for the sleeves

To sew this top, follow these steps:

Cutting the Fabric

  1. Cut out the fabric pieces according to the pattern. You’ll have one front piece, one back piece, two sleeve pieces, and two cuff pieces.

Sewing the Main Body

  1. Sew the front and back pieces together at the side seams and the shoulder seams with a 1 cm seam allowance. Finish the seams with a serger or a zigzag stitch.

Gathering the Fabric

  1. Sew two rows of basting stitches along the top edge of the front and back pieces, leaving long thread tails at both ends.
  2. Pull the thread tails to gather the fabric until it matches your bust measurement plus 2 cm. Distribute the gathers evenly.

Adding Elastic to the Bust

  1. Cut a piece of elastic that is equal to your bust measurement plus 2 cm. Overlap the ends by 1 cm and sew them together to form a loop.
  2. Pin the elastic loop to the wrong side of the gathered edge of the front and back pieces, aligning the edges.
  3. Sew along the elastic with a zigzag stitch, stretching it slightly as you sew.
  4. Fold the elastic over to the wrong side of the fabric and topstitch with a zigzag stitch, stretching it slightly as you sew.

Hemming the Bottom Edge

  1. Hem the bottom edge of the top by folding it twice by 0.5 cm and sewing with a straight stitch.

Preparing the Sleeves

  1. Sew the sleeve pieces together at the side seams with a 1 cm seam allowance. Finish the seams with a serger or a zigzag stitch.

Gathering the Sleeves

  1. Sew two rows of basting stitches along the top edge of each sleeve piece, leaving long thread tails at both ends.
  2. Pull the thread tails to gather the fabric until it matches the armhole measurement of the top. Distribute the gathers evenly.

Attaching the Sleeves

  1. Pin each sleeve to each armhole of the top, right sides together, aligning the seams and notches.
  2. Sew along the armhole with a 1 cm seam allowance. Finish the seams with a serger or a zigzag stitch.

Hemming the Sleeves

  1. Hem each sleeve by folding it twice by 0.5 cm and sewing with a straight stitch.

Creating and Attaching Cuffs

  1. Sew each cuff piece into a tube by folding it in half lengthwise, right sides together, and sewing along the short edge with a 1 cm seam allowance.
  2. Fold each cuff in half widthwise, wrong sides together, aligning the raw edges.
  3. Cut two pieces of elastic that are equal to your wrist measurement plus 2 cm. Overlap the ends by 1 cm and sew them together to form two loops.
  4. Pin each elastic loop to each cuff, dividing them into four equal sections and matching them with four pins.
  5. Pin each cuff to each sleeve opening, right sides together, aligning the seams and pins.
  6. Sew along the cuff with a 1 cm seam allowance, stretching both elastic and fabric as you sew.

Final Touches
