DIY Beading Loom and how to use it

Hello today I want to show you something very special that I have invented and made by myself. It’s a metal loom that can be used for various techniques such as macrame, weaving, embroidery, beading, and loom bands. You can make amazing accessories with this loom, such as necklaces, bracelets, belts, and more.

Can you make your own loom?

I’ve tried many beading loom designs but couldn’t find the right for me , one which will be versatile and strong. I got the inspiration for this loom from wood shop, yes you read it righ!t, but I wanted to make mine even better, stronger and more versatile. So I used some metal parts that I had at home and some tools to create this loom. It’s really not so hard to make, this one you can see below took me just 30 minutes to make. You can easily make one yourself .

What You Need To Make Beading Loom

To make this metal loom, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • Metal plate x 1
  • Metal brackets x 4
  • Wrench
  • Metal washer with rubber
  • Butterfly shape nut x 12
  • Long screws about 10- 12 cm
  • Little screws and nuts x 8
  • Optional: Oblong metal plates x 4

How to Make the Metal Loom

The process of making the metal loom is very simple and easy. Just follow these steps:

Connect two metal brackets with each other using little screws and nuts. Do the same for the other pair of brackets.

Connect the pairs of brackets with the metal plate using little screws and nuts. Make sure they are aligned and secure.

Install six long screws on the metal plate, three on each side. Add a metal washer with rubber and a butterfly shape nut on each screw.

Optional: Install four oblong metal plates on the long screws, two on each side. Add another butterfly shape nut on each screw.

That’s it! Your metal loom is ready to use.

The metal washer with rubbers will hold any kind of twine, rope, ribbon, fishing line, etc. The oblong metal plates will help you with embroidery.

How to Use Beading Loom

You can use the metal loom for various techniques and projects. Here are some examples:

Macrame

You can use the metal loom to make macrame accessories such as bracelets, necklaces, earrings, etc. Just pin your cords to the loom using the butterfly shape nuts and start knotting.

Weaving

You can use the metal loom to weave accessories such as belts, scarves, bags, etc. Just wrap your warp threads around the long screws and weave your weft threads through them using a needle or a shuttle.

Embroidery

You can use the metal loom to embroider accessories such as patches, badges, brooches, etc. Just pin your fabric to the loom using the oblong metal plates and start stitching.

Beading

You can use the metal loom to bead accessories such as bracelets, necklaces, earrings, etc. Just string your beads on your thread and pin it to the loom using the butterfly shape nuts. Then weave your thread through the beads using a needle.

Loom Bands

You can use the metal loom to make loom band accessories such as bracelets, rings, charms, etc. Just loop your bands around the long screws and hook them together using a crochet hook or a clip.

To show you how easy and fun it is to use the metal loom, I will teach you how to make a bracelet with nuts. This is a very simple and stylish project that you can customize with different colors and sizes of nuts.

You will need:

  • Metal nuts
  • Twine or anything you like
  • Scissors
  • Lighter or glue

Here are the steps:

Measure your wrist and cut a piece of twine that is long enough to wrap around it twice.

Make a loop at one end of the twine and tie a knot. This will be your clasp.

Slip some metal nuts on the twine and arrange them as you like.

Pin both ends of the twine to the metal loom using the butterfly shape nuts.

Weave another piece of twine through the nuts using a simple over-and-under pattern.

Weave more using macrame knot or according to the instruction on photos

How to protect the ends of bracelet from unraveling?

Cut off any excess twine and protect the ends from unraveling by burning them with a lighter or applying some glue.

Unpin your bracelet from the loom and enjoy your new accessory.

  • A blanket: You can use the metal loom to weave a cozy and colorful blanket using chunky yarn. You can adjust the size of the blanket by changing the number of warp and weft threads. You can also add some fringe or pom-poms to make it more fun. 
  • A shawl: You can use the metal loom to knit a beautiful and warm shawl using lace or fingering weight yarn. You can choose a simple or complex stitch pattern, such as garter stitch, stockinette stitch, or lace stitch. You can also add some beads or buttons to embellish your shawl.
  • A sock: You can use the metal loom to knit a comfortable and durable sock using sock or sport weight yarn. You can knit the sock in the round or in a flat panel, depending on your preference. You can also customize the size, shape, and design of your sock. 
  • A hat: You can use the metal loom to knit a stylish and cozy hat using worsted or bulky weight yarn. You can knit the hat in the round or in a flat panel, depending on your preference. You can also choose from different styles, such as slouchy, beanie, beret, or earflap. You can also add some pompoms, tassels, or flowers to decorate your hat.   • A baby gift: You can use the metal loom to knit a cute and practical baby gift using baby or sport weight yarn. You can knit a baby blanket, a baby sweater, a baby hat, a baby bootie, or a baby toy. You can also use different colors and patterns to make your gift more adorable.
  • A bag: You can use the metal loom to weave or knit a fashionable and functional bag using cotton or acrylic yarn. You can weave or knit the bag in a square or rectangular shape, depending on your preference. You can also add some handles, straps, zippers, pockets, or embellishments to your bag.
