Sewing is a wonderful hobby that allows you to create your own unique clothing and accessories. However, one of the most important aspects of sewing is choosing the right fabric for your project. The fabric you use can make a big difference in how your garment looks, feels, and fits. In this post, I will share some tips and advice on how to select the best fabric for different types of clothing, such as t-shirts, blouses, skirts, dresses, and pants.

T-shirts and blouses

T-shirts and blouses are versatile garments that can be worn for casual or formal occasions. They can be made from various fabrics, depending on the style and function you want. For example:

  • Cotton and viscose knits are ideal for making comfortable and sporty t-shirts and blouses. They are soft, breathable, and stretchy, and can be found in many colors and patterns. Cotton is a natural fiber that absorbs moisture and is easy to care for. Viscose is a semi-synthetic fiber that has a silky feel and a nice drape.
  • Plain-woven cotton fabrics are commonly used for making men’s shirts. They are crisp, smooth, and durable, and can be woven in different ways to create different effects, such as poplin, twill, or chambray. Plain-woven cotton fabrics are also suitable for making lightweight women’s blouse-shirts, especially if they are blended with other fibers, such as silk, linen, or viscose.
  • Silk fabrics are luxurious and elegant, perfect for making sophisticated blouses. Silk is a natural protein fiber that has a beautiful shine and a soft touch. It is also breathable and thermoregulating, meaning it can keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. However, silk fabrics can be delicate and expensive, so they require special care and handling.
  • Linen fabrics are great for making summer blouses. Linen is a natural fiber that comes from the flax plant. It is strong, absorbent, and resistant to heat and insects. It also has a characteristic texture and wrinkles that give it a rustic charm. Linen fabrics can be dyed in various colors or left natural.

When choosing fabrics for t-shirts and blouses, you should also consider the amount of synthetic fibers in the blend. Synthetic fibers are man-made fibers that are derived from petroleum or other sources. They can have some advantages over natural fibers, such as wrinkle-resistance, durability, colorfastness, and elasticity. However, they can also have some disadvantages, such as being less breathable, more prone to pilling or static electricity, and more harmful to the environment. Therefore, it is advisable to limit the amount of synthetic fibers in your fabric to no more than 20%, especially for summer clothing.

Skirts

Skirts are one of the most fun and creative garments to sew. You can make them in any shape, length, or style you want. You can also use almost any fabric you like for making skirts, as long as it matches the cut and design of your skirt. For example:

  • Stiff fabrics are great for making flared skirts that have a lot of volume and movement. Examples of stiff fabrics include canvas, denim, corduroy, or wool. You can also use thick cotton fabrics from IKEA or other home decor stores for making skirts with pleats or other details.
  • Neoprene is a synthetic rubber fabric that is often used for making wetsuits or sportswear. It is also a good choice for making circle-cut skirts that have a smooth and flared shape. Neoprene is thick and dense, so it holds its shape well without needing any lining or hemming.
  • Knit fabrics or fabrics with elastane are suitable for making fitted or pencil skirts that hug your curves. Knit fabrics are made from loops of yarn that create a stretchy and flexible fabric. Elastane is a synthetic fiber that adds elasticity to woven fabrics. Examples of knit fabrics or fabrics with elastane include jersey, ponte roma, scuba knit, or stretch denim.
  • Lightweight fabrics are perfect for making maxi skirts that flow gracefully around your legs. Lightweight fabrics are thin and airy fabrics that have a lot of drape and movement. Examples of lightweight fabrics include chiffon, georgette, crepe, or rayon.

When choosing fabrics for skirts, you should also consider the season and the occasion you want to wear your skirt. For example, if you want to make a skirt for summer, you should opt for natural fibers or blends that are breathable and cool. If you want to make a skirt for winter, you should choose warmer and heavier fabrics such as wool, flannel, or fleece. If you want to make a skirt for a formal event, you should select fabrics that have a refined and elegant appearance such as silk, satin, or velvet. If you want to make a skirt for a casual day, you should pick fabrics that are comfortable and easy to care for such as cotton, linen, or denim.

Dresses

Dresses are the ultimate garment that combine the functionality of a blouse and a skirt. They can be worn for any occasion and can flatter any body type. When choosing fabrics for dresses, you should consider both the top and the bottom part of your dress. You should choose a fabric that allows for freedom of movement (like a blouse) and falls the way you want it to (like a skirt). You should also choose a fabric that wrinkles less if you want to avoid ironing or steaming your dress. Some of the most popular fabrics for dresses are:

  • Viscose is a semi-synthetic fabric that is made from cellulose, a natural polymer found in plants. Viscose is one of the best fabrics for summer dresses, as it is lightweight, breathable, and doesn’t wrinkle easily. Viscose also has a nice drape and a soft feel, making it ideal for dresses with flowy or fitted silhouettes.
  • Thin wool fabrics are excellent for making evening dresses or dresses for colder seasons. Wool is a natural fiber that comes from the fleece of sheep or other animals. Wool fabrics are warm, cozy, and durable, and can have different textures and weights depending on the type of wool and the way it is woven or knitted. Wool fabrics can also be blended with other fibers, such as silk, cashmere, or polyester, to create different effects and qualities.
  • Lightweight knits are great for making sporty or casual dresses that are comfortable and easy to wear. Lightweight knits are knit fabrics that are thin and soft, such as jersey, interlock, or rib knit. They are stretchy and flexible, and can conform to your body shape without being too tight or loose. Lightweight knits can also be found in many colors and prints, making them fun and versatile.

Cotton or linen fabrics are also good options for making dresses, especially if you like a more natural and rustic look. Cotton and linen fabrics are natural fibers that are breathable, absorbent, and durable. They also have a characteristic texture and wrinkles that give them a relaxed and charming appeal. However, cotton and linen fabrics can also wrinkle easily and require more ironing or steaming than other fabrics.

Pants

different fabrics, denim fabrics

Pants are one of the most challenging garments to sew, as they require precise measurements, fitting, and sewing techniques. They also require the right fabric that can withstand wear and tear, provide comfort and mobility, and fit your body shape well. In my opinion, the best fabric for pants is denim. Denim is a sturdy cotton fabric that is woven in a twill pattern. It is originally blue in color, but can be dyed in various shades or washed to create different effects. Denim is also very durable and doesn’t break at the knees, but adapts to your body shape over time. Denim can also be blended with elastane to add some stretch and flexibility to your pants.

The weight and composition of denim can vary depending on the type and quality of denim you choose. Generally speaking, heavier denim (300-400 g/m²) is more suitable for making jeans or pants that have a more structured and rigid look. Lighter denim (200-300 g/m²) is more suitable for making leggings or pants that have a more soft and flexible look. The amount of elastane in denim can also affect the fit and comfort of your pants. Generally speaking, more elastane (5-7%) is more suitable for making leggings or skinny jeans that hug your legs tightly. Less elastane (1-2%) is more suitable for making regular or loose-fitting jeans that allow more room for movement.

Choosing the right fabric for your sewing project can make a big difference in how your garment turns out. You should consider the type of clothing you want to make, the style and function you want to achieve, the season and occasion you want to wear it, and your personal preference and taste. You should also experiment with different fabrics and see how they behave and feel before cutting and sewing them. By following these tips and advice, you can create beautiful and unique clothing that you will love to wear.
