Accurate measurements are super important for drafting a pattern.
Tools and materials you need for measuring yourself
- A measuring tape
- A notebook and a pencil
- A mirror
- A friend or a helper (optional, but recommended)
To make a bucket hat, you need to measure the following:
- Measure the circumference of your head where you want the hat to sit. if you want, you can add a little looseness to the pattern, example head circumference 56 cm + 1 cm
Example
Head measurements 56 cm -4 cm = 52 cm :6= 8.6 cm radius : 8.6 cm
Decide how deep you want the crown of your hat to be. Typically, bucket hats have a crown depth of 7 cm | 2.75 in or 8 cm | 3.14 in but you can adjust this based on your preference.

- Sellotape/Masking Tape: This helps secure the pattern paper to your working surface.
- Tracing wheel: There are pointed and blunted tracing wheels. The pointed wheel transfers pattern shapes to the paper, while the blunted wheel is used with carbon paper to transfer patterns to muslin or fabric.
- Pattern Notcher: This tool cuts notches at the edge of the pattern to indicate seam allowance, ease notches, and center lines.

- Pencils: Having at least two colors is recommended to differentiate between pattern lines.

Self-Drafting Pattern for Outdoor Hat
Create your own DIY outdoor hat with this easy-to-follow self-drafting pattern. Perfect for sunny days at the beach or a fishing trip, this versatile pattern can be adapted to craft a stylish sun beach hat, a durable fisherman hat, or a trendy bucket hat.
Drawing the Crown Pattern:
Fold your paper into quarters to establish symmetrical guidelines.

Measure and mark the radius of the crown at 8.6 cm. This will be the top of your outdoor hat.

Carefully cut out the circular crown pattern.
Crafting the Brim Pattern:
- For the brim, draw a rectangle with the length calculated as follows:
- Head circumference (e.g., 56 cm) minus 4 cm equals 52 cm.
- Divide by 2 to get 26 cm. This is the length of your brim.
- Decide on the brim width; typically, 7 or 8 cm works well for a sun hat.
- Cut out the brim rectangle and fold it into four equal parts.
Space the cuts evenly around the circumference of the circle, leaving about 1 cm between each cut.
Adding Fullness to the Crown:
- Make radial cuts from the edge of the crown towards the center, spacing them 1 cm apart.
- Spread the sections on a larger paper to add fullness, creating a flared shape for your beach hat.
- Secure the sections with tape, ensuring smooth edges.
Slash and Spread for Brim Fullness:
- Measure the bottom of the brim and divide by 2 to find the width of the fullness cuts.
- Repeat the slash and spread process for the brim, spacing the cuts 1.5 cm apart.
- Spread the sections to add fullness, taping them as you go.
Example
29 cm : 2= 14.5 cm
cut out a rectangle width 14.5 cm here you can choose the length of the hat brim
Example length 8 or 10 cm
Spread the sections apart by a desired amount to add fullness to the brim. Tape the sections in place as you did with the crown pattern.
Final Touches:
Add a 1 cm seam allowance around all pattern pieces.
Mark all relevant points and parts for easy assembly.
