In this post, you will learn how to take measurements and draft perfect crotch depth in pants, jumpsuits and shorts .
Drafting crotch depth is a crucial step in creating well-fitting pants, jumpsuits, overalls, rompers, or shorts. Understanding and accurately measuring crotch depth ensures comfort and proper garment fit, especially around the hips and thighs. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the process of how to measure crotch depth, draft patterns, and adjust crotch depth for the perfect fit. Plus, we’ve included a video tutorial to make it even easier.

Introduction to Crotch Depth Drafting
Crotch depth refers to the measurement from the waist down to the point where your body meets the chair when seated. This measurement is essential for creating garments that fit comfortably without pulling or sagging. Proper crotch depth drafting allows for better mobility and a polished final garment. This guide will help you understand the importance of crotch depth, how to measure it, and how to apply it to your sewing projects.
Section 1: Understanding Crotch Depth
What is Crotch Depth?
Crotch depth is the vertical distance from your waist to the bottom of your crotch area. It’s a key measurement for any garment that involves a crotch seam, such as pants, shorts, jumpsuits, and rompers. Getting this measurement right ensures that the garment will sit comfortably on your body without pulling or creating unsightly wrinkles.
Why is Crotch Depth Important?
Proper crotch depth affects how a garment feels and looks. If the crotch depth is too short, the garment may feel tight and uncomfortable, leading to pulling or creasing. If it’s too long, the garment may sag or create excess fabric, resulting in a less flattering fit. Therefore, accurate crotch depth measurement is essential for achieving a professional-looking garment.
Section 2: Measuring Your Crotch Depth
Tools You’ll Need
- Measuring Tape: For taking accurate body measurements.
- Pattern Paper: To draft your pattern.
- Rulers: A straight ruler and a French curve for drafting smooth curves.Grab my french curved rulers for free here.
- Scissors and Rotary Cutter: For cutting fabric and paper.Check out my detailed post and learn what scissors are the best for your project.
- Pins and Clips: To hold fabric and patterns in place.
- Marker Pen: Used for drawing on the pattern paper.
- Clear Tape: To connect parts of a pattern.
Step-by-Step Measurement Guide
- Sit on a Chair: Sit upright on a hard chair with your feet flat on the ground. Ensure that you’re sitting straight without slouching.
- Place the Measuring Tape: Position the measuring tape at your waist, directly above your hip bone, and let it hang down between your legs to the chair.
- Measure to the Chair: Note the point where the tape touches the chair surface. This is your crotch depth measurement.
- Record the Measurement: Write down the measurement and repeat the process to ensure accuracy.
TIP! Experiment with different methods by sewing four pairs of shorts. This will help you determine which method suits you best for accurate crotch depth measurement.
Section 3: How to Draft Crotch Depth
Here are four methods to draft and calculate crotch depth, each with a detailed formula to guide you.
1. Method: Using Hip Circumference
- Measure Hip Circumference: Measure the fullest part of your hips.
- Formula: 1/4 hip circumference + 4 cm (1.57 in)
- Example: If 1/4 hip measurement is 24.5 cm, add 4 cm, resulting in 28.5 cm. Draw 24.5 cm for the pattern, then continue drafting the pants or shorts.

2. Method: Seated Measurement
Measure Sitting Down: Sit straight on a chair, measuring from waist to chair seat.
Waist to Hip: Measure from waist to the fullest part of your buttocks.
Example: 26 cm + 2 cm ease = 28 cm. Draw a line 28 cm long, then a crotch line 6-8 cm long, and continue with the pattern.
3. Method: Using 1/10 Hip Measurement
Measure Hip Circumference: Measure over the fullest part of the buttocks.
Formula: Hip measurement divided by 10.
Example: 98 cm hips Ă· 10 = 9.8 cm. Draw a line measured from waist to hip (20 cm), then a crotch line of 9.8 cm.

4. Method: Combination Approach
Measure Hip Circumference and Waist to Hip: Use the fullest part of the buttocks.
Formula: Waist to hip measurement + (hips measurement Ă· 10) Ă· 3.
Example: 20 cm waist to hip + (98 cm Ă· 10) = 29.8 cm, 29.8 Ă· 3 = 9.9 cm for the crotch line.
