This denim boho shoulder bag is honestly one of my favorite makes lately, it’s soft, roomy, lightweight, and effortlessly stylish, which means it works just as well for quick errands as it does for a casual day out or travel. And the best part? It’s totally beginner-friendly, so even if you’re still building confidence with your sewing machine, you can absolutely handle this.

I designed this bag to be practical and pretty, with thoughtful details like a pocket, magnetic snap closure, comfy straps, and a clean lining finish. In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through every step, from cutting your fabric all the way to the final stitches, and I’ve included a free PDF pattern to make things even easier. Grab your denim, thread your machine, and let’s sew something beautiful together.

If you’ve been following along with my tutorials, you might remember that in my previous post I showed you step by step how to attach magnetic clasp buttons, from marking placement to securing them neatly and safely. That little skill is going to come in handy here, because we’ll be using the exact same method for this bag. So if you’ve already tried it , you’re ahead of the game! Best Fabrics for Sewing a Denim Shoulder Bag (How to Choose the Right One)

Choosing the right fabric is what makes your denim shoulder bag (or any shoulder bag) look polished, feel comfortable, and last a long time. Different fabrics create totally different vibes, some structured and crisp, others soft and slouchy. Here’s a quick guide to help you pick the perfect material for your style and skill

Fabric TypeBest ForLook & Feel
Cotton CanvasStructured bagsDurable, sturdy, holds shape well
Quilted CottonBoho or cozy stylesSoft, padded, textured
LinenLightweight bagsAiry, natural, relaxed
DenimEveryday bagsCasual, modern, strong (great for a denim shoulder bag)
Cotton PrintsFun daily bagsColorful, lightweight, playful

Tip: If you want a bag that keeps its shape, choose heavier fabrics like canvas or denim. If you prefer a relaxed, slouchy look, lighter cotton or linen works beautifully.

Lining Fabric Ideas (Don’t Skip This Part!)

A good lining makes your bag look professional inside and out. It also adds durability and helps your bag hold its shape. Some great lining options include:

  • Cotton poplin — smooth and easy to sew
  • Lightweight cotton — beginner-friendly and versatile
  • Muslin — soft and budget-friendly
  • Cotton sateen — silky feel with a polished finish

For a denim shoulder bag, a lighter lining fabric is ideal so the bag doesn’t feel bulky or heavy.

Fabrics Note:
Not sure which fabric to choose? In this guide, I break down the best sustainable fabrics for sewing projects, including tips on texture, durability, and eco-friendly options.

How Much Fabric Do You Need?

Before cutting, make sure you have enough fabric for each piece:

Outer Fabric0.5–0.75 yd (45–70 cm)
Lining Fabric0.5 yd (45–50 cm)

Watch the Full Step-by-Step Denim Shoulder Bag Video Tutorial

If you prefer learning visually, I’ve included a full video tutorial where I show exactly how to sew this denim shoulder bag from start to finish. In the video, you’ll see each step in real time, cutting the fabric, sewing the seams, attaching the pocket, installing the magnetic snap, assembling the lining, and finishing the straps. It’s especially helpful if you like to follow along and pause while sewing.

Cutting the Fabric Pieces

Once your fabric is pressed and ready, cut your pattern pieces carefully:

Outer Fabric

  • 2 bag exterior pieces (cut on fold)

Lining

  • 2 lining pieces (cut on fold)

Optional Pocket

  • 1 pocket piece (cut on fold)

Take your time with cutting, accurate pieces are the secret to a professional-looking denim shoulder bag that fits together perfectly later.

How to Sew Denim Shoulder Bag Tutorial

Below is the complete step-by-step guide to sewing your denim shoulder bag. Take your time with each step, and remember, careful sewing and pressing between steps is what gives your bag that beautiful, professional finish.

Step 1 — Sew the Outer Bag

  • Place the outer bag pieces right sides together.
  • Pin around the sides and bottom.
  • Sew 1 cm (⅜ inch) from the edge.

Tip: If you’re sewing denim, a slightly longer stitch length (about 2.8–3 mm) helps the seams lie flatter and look more even.

  • Trim seam allowances if needed.
  • Press seams open with an iron.

  • Turn the outer bag right side out and set aside.

Step 2 — Sew the Pocket (Optional)

  • Fold the top edge of the pocket twice, 1 cm + 1 cm (⅜ inch + ⅜ inch).
  • Press and pin.
  • Sew 1 cm (⅜ inch) from the folded top edge.
  • Press flat.
  • Position the pocket on the right side of the lining.
  • Stitch down the sides and bottom, securing it neatly.

Extra tip: Backstitch at the top corners of the pocket so it stays strong when you use it.

Step 3 — Add the Magnetic Snap

If you’re using a magnetic closure:

Attach the snap 5 cm (2 inches) from the top edge
Place it centered on both lining pieces

Tip:
I’ll share a full click-by-click tutorial on magnetic snaps in another post, here we’re just adjusting the placement.

Helpful tip: Reinforcing the snap area with a small scrap of interfacing or extra fabric behind it will make your denim shoulder bag closure sturdier and longer-lasting.

Step 4 — Sew the Lining

  • Place the lining pieces right sides together.

  • Sew the sides and bottom, leaving a 7 cm (3 inch) gap at the bottom.
  • This gap is used to turn the bag right side out later.

Step 5 — Join Outer Bag & Lining

  • Place the outer bag and lining right sides together.
  • Match side seams and pin around the top opening.
  • Sew around the top 1 cm (⅜ inch) from the edge.
  • Leave the strap opening area unsewn
  • cut on roundings

ready

Tip: Carefully clip curved edges so the seam lays smoothly once turned.

Step 6 — Turn the Bag Right Side Out

  • Pull the bag through the 7 cm lining gap.
  • Gently push out corners.
  • Press the top edge flat.

Take your time shaping the corners, neat corners make a big difference in the finished look.

Step 7 — Sew the Shoulder Straps

This part needs care, especially to avoid twisting the straps.
Strap Steps:

  • Pull one strap end through the lining gap.
  • Place straps wrong sides together.
  • Match seam points carefully.
  • Pin securely, do NOT twist the strap.

  • Sew around the strap edges, 1 cm (⅜ inch) seam allowance.
  • Trim excess fabric if needed, avoid cutting stitches.
  • Turn straps right side out through the gap.

Tip: A safety pin or loop turner makes turning straps much easier.

Step 8 — Close the Lining Gap

  • Fold seam allowances inward.
  • Stitch the gap closed neatly.
  • Push lining inside the bag.

For a nearly invisible finish, you can hand sew the opening with a ladder stitch.

Step 9 — Topstitch & Press

  • Topstitch around the bag opening
  • Press seams flat
  • Give the bag a final steam press

Topstitching not only looks polished, it also strengthens the opening so your denim shoulder bag keeps its shape with everyday use.

Ways to Customize Your Denim Shoulder Bag

One of the best things about sewing your own denim shoulder bag is that you can personalize it to match your style perfectly. Here are a few easy ideas to make your bag unique:

  • Add decorative buttons, patches, or embroidery for a boho look
  • Sew on lace or trim along the seams for a soft handmade touch
  • Use contrast thread for visible topstitching detail
  • Attach a zipper instead of a magnetic snap for extra security
  • Add inside pockets or dividers for better organization
  • Try adjustable straps for comfort and versatility

Denim Shoulder Bag FAQ

Sewist with denim shoulder bag

Is a denim shoulder bag good for beginners to sew?
Yes! A denim shoulder bag is actually a great beginner sewing project because the shapes are simple, the seams are straight, and denim is stable and easy to control compared to slippery fabrics. Even if you’re new to sewing bags, this project is very manageable.

What type of denim works best for a shoulder bag?
Medium-weight denim works best. It’s strong enough to hold shape but not too thick to sew easily. Avoid very heavy jeans denim unless you have a heavy-duty sewing machine.

Do I need interfacing for a denim bag?
Not always. Denim is naturally sturdy, so interfacing is optional. However, adding interfacing to areas like the magnetic snap or straps can make your bag more durable.

How do I make my shoulder bag more structured?
You can use thicker denim, add fusible interfacing, or insert a base stabilizer at the bottom of the bag for extra structure.

Can I wash a handmade denim shoulder bag?
Yes. Most denim bags can be machine washed on gentle and air dried. If your bag has a magnetic snap or special hardware, hand washing is safer.

What can I use instead of a magnetic snap?
You can substitute a zipper, button, Velcro, or tie closure depending on the style you prefer. Each option gives your denim shoulder bag a slightly different look and function.
