What Is an Asymmetric Top?

Fashion illustration of asymmetric babydoll top

An asymmetric top features an intentionally unbalanced design, like one shoulder strap, uneven hem, or diagonal lines, that creates a modern, eye-catching silhouette. Unlike traditional tops, its charm lies in the playful irregularity, making it a stylish statement piece for casual or dressy looks.

How to Self-Draft a Custom Fit Asymmetric Top Sewing Pattern

In this post and video tutorial, I’m showing you how to draft your very own babydoll top pattern from scratch! With a relaxed fit and simple design, this beginner-friendly pattern is perfect for all skill levels.

How to Sew an Asymmetric Top

This beginner-friendly sewing project features an asymmetrical peplum ruffle, fitted bust, and stylish back-button closure. It’s perfect for warm-weather layering or as a statement piece on its own!

Pattern Pieces You’ll Need

Cutting fabric pieces for self-drafted asymmetric top sewing pattern – flat lay
  • Front Bust Piece: Cut 1 on fold
  • Back Bodice Pieces: Cut 2
  • Front Lining: Cut 1 on fold
  • Back Lining Pieces: Cut 2
  • Shoulder Straps: Cut 4 (for 2 finished straps)
  • Button Loops: Cut 3
  • Asymmetric Ruffle (Peplum): Cut 1, customize dimensions based on desired fullness and length

How to cut out pieces perfectly.

Step-by-Step Sewing Tutorial

Step 1: Sew the Main Bodice

  • Place the front bust piece right side up on your work surface.
  • Pin the back bodice pieces to each side, right sides together.
  • Sew the side seams using a 1 cm (3/8″) seam allowance.
  • Press seams open for a neat finish.

Step 2: Assemble the Lining

  • Repeat the same steps for the lining pieces:
    • Join front and back lining at the side seams.
    • Sew and press seams open.
  • Set lining aside for now.

Step 3: Sew the Shoulder Straps

You have two options here:

Option A: Turned-Straps (Recommended for Structured Look)

  • Pair and pin two strap pieces right sides together (2 sets total).
  • Sew along both long sides and one short end.
  • Trim seam allowances, turn right side out, and press flat.

Option B: Simple Raw-Edge Straps

  • Use a zigzag or overlock stitch to finish the long raw edges of 2 single-layer straps.

Step 4: Prepare the Asymmetric Ruffle

Hemming the bottom of asymmetric top
  • Hem the bottom and side edges of the ruffle using a narrow double-fold hem or rolled hem.
  • Press the hem flat.

  • Set your machine to a long straight stitch (4.0 mm or longer).
  • Sew two parallel basting stitches along the top edge of the ruffle.
  • Pull the bobbin threads to gather the ruffle until it matches the bottom width of the bodice.
  • Distribute gathers evenly for a soft, asymmetric drape.

Step 6: Attach the Ruffle

  • Place the main bodice and lining together at the hem, wrong sides facing out.
  • Pin the ruffle to the bottom edge, aligning the gathered edge with the hem.
  • Leave 1 cm (3/8”) unstitched at both sides to make turning easier later.

Step 7: Roll and Sandwich the Ruffle

Asymmetric top in progress – pinned shoulder straps and rolled ruffle using burrito method
  • Roll the ruffle up toward the neckline and out of the way.
  • Lay the lining over the main bodice, right sides together.
  • This creates a “fabric sandwich” (aka burrito method), with the ruffle hidden between layers.

Step 8: Insert the Shoulder Straps

Asymmetric top in progress – pinned shoulder straps and rolled ruffle using burrito method
  • Slip the raw ends of the straps between the lining and main bodice at the front and back strap positions.
  • Make sure they are even, untwisted, and securely pinned.

Step 9: Sew the Upper Edge

Asymmetric top in progress – pinned shoulder straps and rolled ruffle using burrito method
  • Stitch around the entire upper edge of the top, securing the lining, main fabric, straps, and ruffle.
  • Leave one side seam open, you’ll use this to turn everything right side out later.

Step 10: Clip Curves

Asymmetric top in progress – pinned shoulder straps and rolled ruffle using burrito method
  • Clip along the curved edges (neckline, underarms) to help the fabric lay flat.
  • Snip perpendicular to the seam line, but don’t cut through your stitches.

Step 11: Turn Right Side Out

Asymmetric top in progress – pinned shoulder straps and rolled ruffle using burrito method
  • Gently turn the top right side out through the open side seam.
  • Smooth out the ruffle, neckline, and straps.
  • Press everything flat, focusing on crisp neckline and strap edges.

Step 12: Create a Ruched Bust Detail

Creating ruched detail in asymmetric top.
  • Mark a vertical center line down the bust.
  • Sew two parallel basting stitches 0.5 cm apart along that line.
  • Pull threads to gather the fabric between bust cups for a ruched center.
  • Secure gathers with a short stitch and press flat.

Step 13: Sew Button Loops

  • Cut a fabric strip: 30 cm long x 4 cm wide.
  • Fold it right sides together, lengthwise, and sew along the edge.

Step 15: Add Buttons
