12 June 2026

I have a little confession to make.

This wasn’t supposed to become a series.

A little while ago, I shared a blog post showing you how to draft three different bikini top patterns from scratch. It was perfect for anyone who loves a bit of pattern making and enjoys creating their own custom designs.

But after reading your lovely comments and messages, I realised something.

Not everyone wants to draft a pattern.

Free PDF Pattern Included!

Some of you are short on time. Some are completely new to sewing swim wear. And some of you simply want to grab a cute pattern, cut out your fabric, and have a new bikini ready before the next beach trip.

Honestly? I completely understand.

Summer has a funny way of sneaking up on us. One minute you’re organising your sewing room, and the next you’re searching for a swimsuit because holidays are just around the corner.

So today, we’re doing things a little differently.

Instead of drafting, I’m going to show you exactly how to sew a beautiful adjustable bikini top step by step. We’ll make it together, from cutting the fabric to tying the final straps.

And because I couldn’t resist adding a little surprise.

I’ve created a free basic bikini top pattern for my subscribers!

The pattern comes in printable PDF format and includes:
  • Sizes XS–4XL.
  • Printable A4 and US Letter formats.
  • Beginner-friendly construction.
  • Adjustable fit.
  • Six different styling options.
  • A clean, classic design that’s easy to customise.
Handmade wrap bikini top with adjustable straps and comfortable fit.

You’ll find the free pattern waiting for you at the end of this blog post.

But that’s not all.

I’ve also put together a full video tutorial to go along with this photo tutorial. Sometimes it’s easier to watch a tricky sewing step than stare at a picture wondering, “Wait… does this strap go here or there?”

So I highly recommend sewing along with the video. Between the photos, written instructions, and video, everything should click into place.

The best part?

This bikini top doesn’t require much fabric, making it a fantastic scrap-busting project if you have a little swim fabric left over from another project. In just a short afternoon, you can create a stylish handmade bikini that’s completely your own.

Whether you’re brand new to sewing swimwear or this is simply your next DIY fashion adventure, I’m so happy you’re here.

Now grab your favourite stretch fabric, thread your sewing machine, and let’s make something you’ll actually want to wear this summer.

Why Make Your Own Bikini Top?

Front view of a DIY bikini top with gathered cups and halter neck design.

Let’s be honest.

Finding the perfect bikini isn’t always easy.

One fits your bust but not your band. Another has beautiful colours but uncomfortable straps. Sometimes you love the style but hate the fit.

Making your own bikini solves all those problems.

You get:

  • The perfect fit.
  • Your favourite fabric.
  • Adjustable straps.
  • Professional details.
  • Multiple styling options.
  • A unique handmade piece.

Best of all, this bikini pattern can be styled six different ways, making it feel like several bikini top patterns in one.

Choosing the right bikini pattern is important, but choosing the best fabric can make an even bigger difference.

Best Fabric for Sewing a Bikini Top

The best fabric for swimwear should stretch comfortably while keeping its shape after swimming.

Recommended fabrics:

  • Nylon Spandex.
  • Lycra.
  • Polyester Spandex blends.
  • Swim Knit.
  • Stretch Swim Jersey.

For the lining use:

  • Swim lining.
  • Lightweight mesh.

These fabrics provide support while creating a smooth professional finish.

Avoid:

  • Cotton.
  • Linen.
  • Heavy knits.
  • Sweatshirt fleece.

These materials absorb water and won’t recover properly after stretching.

Bikini Top Fabric Requirements

Planning your project before cutting is always a good idea. Buying enough fabric means fewer surprises halfway through your sewing project.

The following chart is based on fabric 150 cm (59 inches) wide.

XS–S1.30 m1.42 yd
M–L1.50 m1.64 yd
XL–2XL1.70 m1.86 yd
3XL–4XL1.90 m2.08 yd

Any leftover fabric can be used for a matching bottom pattern, scrunchies, swim accessories, or even coordinating swimwear for little ones.

Supplies You’ll Need

Fabric

  • Swimwear fabric.
  • Swim lining or lightweight mesh.
  • Swimwear elastic.
  • Polyester thread.

Tools

  • Sewing machine.
  • Stretch or ballpoint needle (75/11 or 80/12).
  • Sewing clips.
  • Rotary cutter or scissors.
  • Safety pin or loop turner.
  • Iron.

A serger is optional but definitely not required.

How to Sew the Bikini Top

Now for the fun part!

Don’t let swimwear fabrics scare you. This bikini top comes together surprisingly quickly, making it one of the most enjoyable sewing tutorials for beginners.

Take your time and don’t stretch the fabric while sewing.

Step 1: Cut Out Your Fabric

Using your free sewing pattern, cut:

Standard Triangle Bikini Top String Lengths

If you’re sewing a classic triangle bikini top, choosing the right string length makes all the difference for comfort and adjustability.

Neck Ties (2 pieces)

  • Standard length: 55–70 cm (21.5–27.5 inches) each
  • Most versatile: 60–65 cm (23.5–25.5 inches) each
  • For larger sizes or if you prefer longer bow ties, use 70 cm (27.5 inches) for each strap.

Underbust Tie (1 piece)

  • Standard length: 140–160 cm (55–63 inches)
  • A safe, all-around choice: 150 cm (59 inches)

For One Triangle Bikini Top You’ll Need:

  • 2 neck ties: 60–65 cm (23.5–25.5 inches) each
  • 1 underbust tie: 150 cm (59 inches)

These measurements work well for most classic adjustable triangle bikini tops. If you’re making a sliding triangle bikini top, these are also the standard lengths commonly used in ready-to-wear swimwear.

Sewing Tip: It’s always better to cut the ties slightly longer. You can easily trim excess length, but ties that are too short can make the bikini uncomfortable to adjust and tie securely.

Strap Measurements

Back tie strap140 cm × 3 cm55″ × 1.2″

Double-check all your pattern pieces before sewing. It’s much easier than discovering halfway through that a strap is missing.

Step 2: Sew the Shoulder Straps and Back Tie

Let’s start with the easy bits.

Place each shoulder strap right sides together and sew along the long edge using your sewing machine.

You can use:

  • Stretch stitch.
  • Narrow zigzag stitch.
  • Overlocker.

Repeat for the back tie strap.

Turn the straps right side out using a safety pin or loop turner.

Press gently with a warm iron.

Set them aside.

Step 3: Prepare the Bikini Cups

Lay one outer fabric cup with the right side facing up.

Position one shoulder strap at the top edge where indicated on the pattern.

Now place the matching lining cup right side down.

The straps should be neatly sandwiched between the two layers.

The wrong side of the fabric should be facing outward while the pieces are clipped together.

Repeat for the second cup.

Optional: Add Side Elastic for Extra Support

Here’s one little trick that gives your handmade bikini a more professional finish.

Adding an elastic band to the sides helps prevent stretching and gives extra support.

Cut two pieces of swimwear elastic:

  • 1 cm (3/8 inch) wide.
  • Side edge length minus 2 cm (3/4 inch).

Place the elastic on the wrong side of the outer fabric about 1 cm (3/8 inch) from the edge.

Sew using a stretch stitch.

Leave approximately 2 cm (3/4 inch) unstitched at the bottom.

This small detail helps your bikini top keep its shape after many trips to the beach or pool.

Step 4: Sew the Bikini Cups

Sew around each cup using a stretch stitch or overlocker.

Leave the turning opening indicated in the pattern.

Trim bulky seam allowances if needed.

Turn each cup right side out.

Shape the curves gently with a point turner or chopstick.

Give everything a light press.

At this point, you’ll finally start to see your handmade bikini taking shape.

Optional: Add Swimwear Bra Cups

If you’d like a little extra support or full coverage, now is the perfect time to add removable swimwear bra cups.

You may see these sold as:

  • Swimwear bra cups.
  • Foam bra cups.
  • Bikini bra pads.
  • Removable bra inserts.
  • Sew-in bra cups.

Simply slide them into the lining before closing the opening and adjust them until they’re evenly positioned.

This step is optional but adds comfort, shaping, and a polished finish.

Step 5: Sew the Tie Strap Tunnel

Now it’s time to turn those individual cups into an adjustable bikini top.

Fold the lower edge of each bikini cup toward the wrong side by 2 cm (3/4 inch). Clip or pin in place and sew close to the folded edge using a stretch stitch.

This creates a tunnel for the back tie strap to slide through.

Make sure the tunnel is wide enough for the strap to move easily. The adjustable design is one of the reasons this bikini pattern works so well for different body types and helps create the perfect fit.

Repeat for both cups.

Step 6: Thread the Back Tie Strap

Take your long back tie strap and carefully thread it through the tunnel of the first bikini cup.

Continue threading it through the second cup in the same direction.

The cups should slide freely along the strap, allowing you to adjust the spacing to suit your shape and preferred coverage.

Handmade bikini top made from soft jersey fabric.

One of the best things about this DIY bikini is that you can customise the fit every time you wear it.

Step 7: Finish the Ends

We’re almost done!

To prevent fraying and create a polished finish, tie simple knots at the ends of:

  • both shoulder straps,
  • both ends of the back tie strap.

You can keep the knots simple or add decorative beads for an extra beachy touch.

And just like that.

Your handmade bikini top is finished!

The adjustable cups and wrap-around ties make it flattering, comfortable, and easy to customise for your body.

Best of all, this clever design can be styled in six different ways, giving you multiple looks from a single sewing project.

5 Common Bikini Sewing Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them!)

DIY bikini top sewn from stretchy fabric displayed on a black dress form.

Can I let you in on a little secret?

Almost everyone makes at least one of these mistakes the first time they sew swimwear.

I certainly did!

The good news? Bikini tops are actually very forgiving projects, and most little mishaps are easy to fix. If this is your first adventure into sewing swimwear, don’t worry about making everything absolutely perfect.

Here are the five most common bikini sewing mistakes, and a few simple tips to help you avoid them.

Mistake #1: Stretching the Fabric While Sewing

This is probably the biggest beginner mistake.

It can be tempting to pull the fabric through the sewing machine, especially when working with slippery swimwear materials. Unfortunately, stretching the fabric while sewing can create wavy seams and a bikini that doesn’t fit quite right.

How to avoid it:

  • Let your sewing machine do the work.
  • Guide the fabric gently without pulling.
  • Test your stitch settings on scraps first.

A smooth, relaxed approach will give you much neater results.

Mistake #2: Using Cotton Thread

Cotton thread works beautifully for many sewing projects, but swimwear isn’t one of them.

Cotton absorbs water and isn’t nearly as strong as polyester thread. Over time, chlorine, salt water, and repeated stretching can weaken the seams.

How to avoid it:

Choose good-quality polyester thread for your bikini top.

It’s stronger, more durable, and designed to handle stretchy fabrics much better.

Mistake #3: Forgetting to Test Your Stitches

Have you ever sewn an entire seam only to discover the stitch doesn’t stretch?

We’ve all been there.

Different fabrics behave differently, so the perfect stitch for one swimsuit fabric may not work for another.

How to avoid it:

Before sewing your actual bikini, test:

  • Zigzag stitch.
  • Stretch stitch.
  • Stitch length.
  • Thread tension.

Spending two minutes testing can save a lot of frustration later.

Mistake #4: Skipping the Lining

It might seem like an easy shortcut, but skipping the lining can change the way your bikini fits and wears.

A lining adds:

  • Support.
  • Comfort.
  • Better shape.
  • Extra durability.
  • A more professional finish.

How to avoid it:

Use swim lining or lightweight mesh whenever possible.

Your finished bikini will thank you for it.

Mistake #5: Making the Straps Too Tight

It’s easy to think tighter means better support.

Actually, straps that are too tight can make your bikini uncomfortable and affect the overall fit.

The beauty of this adjustable bikini top is that you can customise the fit every time you wear it.

How to avoid it:

Try the bikini on before trimming any excess strap length.

Adjust the fit until it feels comfortable and secure.

Remember, you’ll want enough flexibility to tie the top in different ways.

Don’t Worry About Perfection

Here’s a little secret: your first bikini doesn’t have to be perfect.

Maybe a strap is a little longer, or a seam isn’t perfectly straight. That’s all part of learning.

The best thing about this project is that it uses very little fabric and comes together quickly, so you can always make another one. Every bikini you sew builds your confidence—and trust me, after finishing your first handmade swimsuit, you’ll already be planning the next!

Pro Tips for Sewing Swimwear

If this is your first swimwear project, don’t panic. Sewing swimwear is much easier than most people think, and bikini top patterns are a fantastic place to start.

Here are a few tricks that make a big difference:

  • Use a stretch or ballpoint needle (75/11 or 80/12).
  • Polyester thread is stronger than cotton and stands up better to chlorine and salt water.
  • Sew with a narrow zigzag or stretch stitch.
  • Don’t pull the stretch fabric while sewing.
  • Let your sewing machine feed the fabric naturally.
  • Use clips instead of pins whenever possible.
  • Test your stitches on scraps first.

These little details help your finished bikini look just as beautiful as expensive shop-bought swimwear.

Best Elastic for Swimwear

People often ask why homemade swimsuits sometimes lose their shape after a few wears.

The answer is usually the elastic.

Using proper swimwear elastic is a good idea because it’s designed to handle stretching, chlorine, sunscreen, and salt water.

Elastic TypeRecommendedBest For
Swimwear elastic⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Bikini tops and bottoms
Bra elastic⭐⭐⭐⭐Shoulder straps
Clear elastic⭐⭐⭐Lightweight support
Cotton elastic⭐⭐Everyday clothing

Quality elastic helps your bikini keep its shape season after season.

How to Add Swimwear Bra Cups

Want a little extra support or full coverage?

Good news! This bikini top can easily be customised with removable swimwear bra cups.

You may find them sold as:

  • Swimwear bra cups.
  • Foam bra cups.
  • Bikini bra pads.
  • Removable bra inserts.
  • Sew-in bra cups.

Adding bra cups can:

  • Improve shaping.
  • Add comfort.
  • Create extra coverage.
  • Help achieve a perfect fit.

This step is completely optional, so choose whatever feels best for you.

6 Ways to Wear This Bikini Top

Sewing tutorial collage for an easy DIY bikini top.

One of my favourite things about this free bikini pattern is that it doesn’t feel like you’re making just one bikini.

Thanks to the adjustable straps and sliding cups, you can wear it in several different ways, making it perfect for holidays and summer adventures.

1. Classic Triangle Halter

The timeless bikini style.

Tie behind your neck and around your back.

Perfect for swimming and tanning.

2. Cross Front Wrap

Cross the straps across the front before tying.

This creates extra support and an elegant look.

3. Criss-Cross Back

Cross the straps at the back instead of tying them directly.

Very comfortable and supportive.

4. Strapless Wrap

Hide the shoulder straps and wrap the long ties around your body.

A great option for fewer tan lines.

5. One Shoulder Style

Wear one strap across a single shoulder for a modern asymmetrical look.

Perfect for beach parties.

6. Twist Front Bikini

Twist the cups slightly before tying.

This creates a chic gathered front detail.

Unlike many one-piece swimsuit designs or traditional two-piece swimsuits, this versatile bikini top gives you several different looks from one simple sewing project.

Don’t be afraid to experiment and create your own style!

Can You Customize This Bikini Pattern?

Absolutely!

In fact, one of my favourite things about this bikini top is how easy it is to make it your own. The basic pattern is designed to be simple and beginner-friendly, but with a few creative touches, you can create a completely different look every time you sew it.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll probably finish one bikini and immediately start planning the next one!

Here are a few fun and easy ways to customise your handmade bikini top.

Want a sweeter, romantic look?

Add Cute Ruffles

Sew a small ruffle along the neckline or the lower edge of the bikini cups. Soft gathers instantly add a feminine touch and are perfect for floral or pastel swim fabrics.

Play with Color Blocking

Who says your bikini has to be one colour?

Mix and match fabrics to create a modern colour-blocked design. Try contrasting cups and straps or combine two coordinating prints for a unique handmade look.

This is also a fantastic way to use up smaller pieces of leftover swim fabric.

Sew Contrasting Straps

Sometimes the smallest detail makes the biggest impact.

Instead of matching straps, choose a contrasting colour to make your bikini pop. Black and white, navy and coral, or bright tropical colours all look fabulous together.

Add Decorative Rings

Metal or resin rings can completely change the style of your bikini.

Add them where the straps meet the cups or use them as decorative accents on the shoulder straps for a trendy boutique-inspired finish.

Finish with Beads

Tie the ends of the straps with decorative beads for a fun beachy detail.

Wooden beads, colourful acrylic beads, or shell-inspired designs all add personality to your project.

Make a Removable Bow

Can’t decide between simple and girly?

Make a detachable bow that slides onto the centre of the bikini top. Wear it when you want an extra cute detail and remove it for a more classic look.

It’s like getting two bikinis in one!

Use Reversible Fabrics

If you can find reversible swim fabric, give it a try.

You’ll have two different looks in one bikini top, making packing for holidays even easier.

One side could be a bold print while the other is a classic solid colour.

Sew Matching Bikini Bottoms

A matching set always looks polished and professional.

Use leftover fabric to create coordinating bikini bottoms, whether you prefer high-waisted styles, classic cuts, or cheeky designs.

It’s a great way to use every last piece of fabric and create a completely custom swimwear set.

Mix and Match Your Favourite Details

Here’s a little secret…

You don’t have to choose just one idea.

Add ruffles and decorative rings.

Use contrasting straps with a removable bow.

Sew a reversible bikini with matching bottoms.

The possibilities are almost endless, and that’s one of the best parts of making your own swimwear.

Store-bought bikinis come exactly as they are.

A handmade bikini lets you create something that’s uniquely yours.

So don’t be afraid to experiment, play with colours, and add little personal touches.

Who knows? Your favourite version of this bikini top might be one you invent yourself!

Style It Your Way

One of the best things about a handmade bikini top is that you’re not limited to one look.

Sure, it’s perfect for swimming and sunny beach days, but with a few simple styling tricks, it can become part of your everyday summer wardrobe too. I always think handmade pieces deserve to be worn as much as possible, and this bikini top is surprisingly versatile.

Whether you’re heading to the beach, relaxing by the pool, exploring a seaside town, or grabbing lunch after a swim, here are a few easy outfit ideas to inspire you.

Pair It with High-Waisted Bikini Bottoms

A matching high-waisted bottom creates a timeless vintage-inspired swimsuit.

Not only is it comfortable, but it also balances the adjustable wrap style of the bikini top beautifully.

Mix and match colours or sew a coordinating set using the same swim fabric for a polished handmade look.

Throw on a Wrap Skirt

A lightweight wrap skirt is one of my favourite beach accessories.

It’s easy to slip on after swimming and instantly transforms your bikini into a stylish holiday outfit.

Choose a breezy cotton, linen, or gauze fabric for an effortless summer vibe.

Wear It with Linen Beach Trousers

There’s something about linen trousers and a handmade bikini top that just screams vacation.

Wide-leg linen trousers make the perfect cover-up for beach walks, seaside cafés, or sunset dinners by the water.

Neutral shades like white, beige, and soft olive pair beautifully with colourful swimwear prints.

Add a Crochet Cover-Up

Crochet cover-ups and handmade swimwear are a match made in summer heaven.

Whether you choose a long dress, a cardigan, or an oversized crochet top, the textured fabric adds a lovely boho feel to your beach outfit.

Pair with Denim Shorts

Who says bikini tops are only for the beach?

A classic pair of denim shorts turns your bikini top into a casual summer crop top that’s perfect for festivals, holidays, or relaxing in the garden.

Add sandals and sunglasses, and you’re ready to go.

Layer with an Oversized Beach Shirt

If I could recommend just one summer wardrobe essential, it would be an oversized beach shirt.

Wear it open over your bikini for an effortless relaxed look or tie it at the waist for a little extra style.

Crisp white cotton, lightweight linen, or soft muslin fabrics all work beautifully.

Mix, Match, and Have Fun

Here’s my favourite part about handmade swimwear…

There are no rules.

Pair your bikini top with matching bottoms one day and linen trousers the next.

Throw on a wrap skirt for a beach stroll or layer it under an oversized shirt for a casual summer outfit.

Experiment with colours, textures, and accessories until you find combinations that make you smile.

After all, one of the biggest joys of sewing your own clothes is creating pieces that fit not only your body but also your personal style.
