In this post, I will teach you how to sew a midi dress with my free PDF pattern and how to modify the pattern to create a halter top, a dress, or a jumpsuit.
In this post, I’m going to show you how to sew a line midi dress with balloon sleeves and cuffs. This is a beginner friendly project that only requires basic sewing skills and a few hours of your time. You’ll also get a free PDF pattern that you can print at home in 5 different sizes. This dress is perfect for spring and summer, as it’s light, airy, and comfortable. It also has a flattering silhouette that suits any body type. Plus, it’s super trendy and stylish, as balloon sleeves and cuffs are one of the hottest trends for 2023.
What is a line midi dress?
Let’s start from the beginning: A line midi dress is a type of dress that has a fitted bodice and a flared skirt that ends around the middle of the calf. The shape of the dress resembles the letter A, hence the name.
What do you need to make this midi dress ?
To make this midi dress with balloon sleeves and cuffs, you’ll need the following materials and tools:
- A sewing machine: You’ll need a sewing machine capable of straight and zigzag stitches.
- A serger (optional)
- An iron: is very important for sewing , as it can make a huge difference in the quality and appearance of your projects
- Scissors: Keep scissors handy for cutting fabric and elastic.
- Pins: Use pins to secure fabric pieces during sewing.
- A Measuring Tape: A measuring tape is essential for taking measurements and adjusting the pattern as needed.
- A fabric marker: help us achieve accuracy and consistency in our sewing project
- A Thread: Ensure you have matching or contrasting thread for your sewing.
- Elastic: Prepare about 1 meter of 1/4-inch-wide elastic for the neckline, ruched part and the sleeves.
- Fabric: You will need about 3 yards of lightweight fabric, such as cotton, linen, rayon, or chiffon, to make this dress. You can use the same fabric for both the sleeves and the dress, or you can mix and match different textures for a unique look. For example, you can try using stiffer fabric for the sleeves, like organza or tulle, and softer material for the rest of the dress, such as satin or silk. You can also upcycle things like bed sheets, as I did for my dress.

A step-by-step guide on how to sew your midi dress with balloon sleeves and cuffs
- Step 1: Cut out the pattern pieces. Print out the PDF pattern at 100% scale and tape the pages together. Cut out the pattern pieces according to your size and the cutting layout. You should have 8 pieces: front bodice (cut 1 on fold), back bodice (cut 2), front skirt (cut 1 on fold), back skirt (cut 2), sleeve (cut 2), cuff (cut 4). Transfer any markings or notches from the pattern to the fabric using chalk or a fabric marker.
- Step 2: Sew the bodice. With right sides together, pin and sew the back bodice pieces to the front bodice piece at the shoulder seams using a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Press the seams open. Finish the neckline with bias tape or facing according to your preference.
- Step 3: Sew the skirt. With right sides together, pin and sew the back skirt pieces to the front skirt piece at the side seams using a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Press the seams open.
- Step 4: Attach the bodice to the skirt. With right sides together, pin and sew the bodice to the skirt at the waistline using a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Press the seam up towards the bodice.
- Step 5: Insert the zipper. With right sides together, pin and sew the center back seam of the dress from the bottom edge to the zipper mark using a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Press the seam open. Place the zipper face down on the seam allowance and pin it in place. Using a zipper foot, sew along the zipper tape close to the teeth on both sides. Cut away the excess fabric below the zipper.
- Step 6: Hem the dress. Fold and press the bottom edge of the dress 1/4 inch to the wrong side. Fold and press again 1 inch to the wrong side. Pin and sew along the inner fold using a straight stitch or a blind hem stitch.
- Step 7: Sew the sleeves. With right sides together, pin and sew the sleeve pieces along the underarm seams using a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Press the seams open. Gather the sleeve cap between the notches by sewing two rows of basting stitches within the seam allowance and pulling the threads to create gathers. Adjust the gathers to fit the armhole of the bodice. With right sides together, pin and sew the sleeve to the armhole, matching the notches and easing in any excess fabric. Press the seam towards the sleeve.
- Step 8: Sew the cuffs. With right sides together, pin and sew two cuff pieces along one short edge using a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Press the seam open. Repeat with the other two cuff pieces. Fold each cuff in half with wrong sides together, matching the raw edges. Press and baste along.
- Step 9: Attach the cuffs to the sleeves. With right sides together, pin and sew one cuff to one sleeve, matching the raw edges and the seams. Press the seam towards the cuff. Fold the cuff over the seam allowance and press. Topstitch along the seam on the right side of the sleeve. Repeat with the other cuff and sleeve.
- Step 10: Finish the sleeves and cuffs. To create the balloon effect, you need to create a casing for elastic on the sleeves and cuffs. Fold and press the upper edge of the sleeve 1/4 inch to the wrong side. Fold and press again 3/4 inch to the wrong side. Pin and sew along the inner fold, leaving a small opening to insert the elastic. Cut a piece of 1/4 inch wide elastic that is slightly smaller than your upper arm measurement. Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and thread it through the casing. Overlap the ends of the elastic and sew them together. Close the opening on the casing. Repeat with the other sleeve. For the cuffs, do the same thing but use a piece of elastic that is slightly smaller than your wrist measurement.
How to modify the pattern for a dress ?
You can modify the pattern for a midi dress with sleeves in many ways, depending on your preferences and skills. Some of the possible modifications are:
