Choosing the Right Fabric for Your Dress
The first step in making your dress is selecting the fabric that matches your vision and the season. You want a fabric that is easy to sew, comfortable to wear, and flattering to your figure. Here are some of the best options for this project:
- Silk Cotton: This fabric is a blend of silk and cotton fibers, giving it a luxurious feel and a slight sheen. It’s breathable, lightweight, and perfect for special occasions.
- Cotton: This fabric is one of the most popular and versatile fabrics for sewing. It’s breathable, durable, and easy to work with. It comes in a variety of colors and patterns, so you can find one that suits your style.
- Linen: This fabric is made from flax fibers, giving it a natural and rustic look. It’s breathable, absorbent, and ideal for summer outfits. It also drapes well and creates a relaxed vibe.
- Viscose: This fabric is made from regenerated cellulose fibers, giving it a smooth and silky finish. It’s lightweight, fluid, and suitable for both casual and formal dresses.
I recommend using medium or lightweight fabrics for this project, as they will create a nice drape and movement for your dress. Avoid fabrics that are too thick or stiff, as they will make your dress bulky or rigid.

Creating Your Pattern for Your Dress

- Use the free PDF printable pattern: If you want a quick and easy way to get started, you can download my free PDF printable pattern. This pattern is designed to fit most body types and sizes. All you need to do is print it out, cut it out, and tape it together.
- Make your own pattern or adjust the existing one: If you want a more customized fit or a different design, you can make your own pattern or adjust the existing one. To learn how to do this, watch my video guide. This guide will show you how to measure yourself, draw your pattern on paper, and make any changes you want.

Whichever option you choose, make sure to test your pattern on some scrap fabric before cutting your final fabric. This will help you avoid any mistakes or surprises later on.
French Curved Rulers
In this video, I’ll show you how to use French curved rulers to make this dress. French curved rulers are curved rulers used in sewing, fashion design and pattern making. They are used to make sewing patterns and to adapt existing curved lines on patterns such as armhole, neckline, waistline, and hip line.
French curved rulers help you create smooth and natural curves that fit your body shape and style. They also help you mark seam allowance and grading on your patterns.
I have a whole post on French curved rulers on my blog, where I explain what they are, how to use them, and what types of curves they have.
Plus, as a bonus for my readers and viewers, I have created 6 different French curved rulers that you can download and print for free. These rulers are based on the most common and useful curves for sewing and pattern making.
