  • It adds style and interest to your skirt

Curved waistbands are not hard to make, once you know the basics. You don’t need any special tools or patterns, just some basic sewing supplies and your own measurements. By drafting your own curved waistband, you can customize it to your preferences and create a perfect fit for any skirt.

By the end of this post, you’ll be able to draft your own curved waistband for skirts, and enjoy the comfort and beauty of this versatile waistband. So, let’s get started!

What is Curved Waistband

An a-line skirt drawing with curved waistband.

Upper you see a fashion illustration of a skirt with a curved waistband. The curved waistband is a curved band that follows the natural shape of the waist, and has a smaller width and length on the top edge than the bottom edge. It is attached to the skirt below the waist, and hugs the tummy and hips. The curved waistband is more comfortable and flattering than a straight one.

Crafting a curved waistband is a straightforward process once you grasp the fundamentals. No special tools or patterns are required, just basic sewing supplies and accurate measurements.

What is the Difference Between Straight and Curved Waistband

A comparison of two skirts with different waistbands, one curved and one straight, showing the fit and style differences

Here you can see a fashion illustration of two skirts with different waistbands, one straight and one curved, showing the fit and style differences. The straight waistband is a horizontal band that is the same width and length on both the top and bottom edges. It is attached to the skirt at the waist, and creates a gap at the back. The curved waistband is a curved band that follows the natural shape of the waist, and has a smaller width and length on the top edge than the bottom edge. It is attached to the skirt below the waist, and hugs the tummy and hips. The straight waistband is less comfortable and flattering than the curved one.

To decide which waistband type is best for you, you can try creating a straight waistband first and test it on your body in paper. If it appears to have too much space at the top, you can try creating a curved one. You can also compare those two by toiling the pattern and pinching out any excess fabric if needed
