What are Ruched Straps ?

Ruched straps refer to fabric strips that have been gathered, pleated, or repeatedly folded as an embellishment. These straps are often incorporated into clothing patterns, adding a 3-dimensional look and emphasizing the contours of the garment.

Suggested Fabric

Before you thread that needle, let’s talk fabric. Choosing the right material is crucial for achieving those dreamy ruched straps. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Lightweight Fabrics: Opt for lightweight fabrics that drape beautifully. Think chiffon, silk, or cotton voile. These materials gather like poetry and won’t weigh down your shoulders.
  • Prints and Solids: Ruched straps play well with both. Solids give a clean, sophisticated look, while prints add whimsy. Picture a floral sundress with these straps—pure magic!

Step by Step Tutorial: How to Sew Ruched Straps

Start by cutting a strip of fabric to your desired length and width for the shoulder strap. Keep in mind the ruching will shorten the final length, so cut the fabric slightly longer than needed.

  • cut x 2 straps
  • length x 2 length of the shoulder strap

for example

  •  shoulder strap length 38 cm  + 2 cm seam allowances = 40 cm long
  • 40 cm x 2 = 80 cm ruffle strap length
