What are Straps

Straps are fabric strips that are used to attach to garments, such as dresses or tops, to provide support and style. There are different ways to sew straps, depending on the type and width of the fabric, the length and shape of the straps, and the desired look.

How to Sew Straps

How to measure and cut the fabric for straps

The first step to sew straps is to measure and cut the fabric. You can cut the fabric in bias or grain line, depending on the stretch and drape of the fabric. Bias cut fabric has more stretch and drape, while grain line fabric has more stability and structure.

The width and length of the fabric depend on the size and style of the straps. For example, you can cut the fabric around 2 inches in width and the desired length for narrow straps, or around 4 inches in width and the desired length for wide straps.

Here are the steps to measure and cut the fabric:
  1. Lay the fabric flat on a cutting mat or a large table. Make sure the fabric is smooth and wrinkle-free.
  2. Mark the bias or grain line on the fabric, using a ruler and a fabric marker. The bias line is the diagonal line that runs at a 45-degree angle from the selvage or the edge of the fabric. The grain line is the vertical or horizontal line that runs parallel to the selvage or the edge of the fabric.
  3. Measure the width and length of the straps, using a measuring tape and a fabric marker. Add some extra length for seam allowance and adjustment. For example, if you want your straps to be 18 inches long, you can add 2 inches for seam allowance and 2 inches for adjustment, and mark 22 inches on the fabric.
  4. Cut the fabric along the marked lines, using a pair of scissors. You can also use a rotary cutter and a ruler for more accuracy and speed. You should have a long strip of fabric for each strap.

How to sew the fabric for straps

The next step to sew straps is to sew the fabric. You can sew the fabric in different ways, depending on the width and style of the straps. For narrow straps, you can sew the fabric right sides together and turn it right side out. For wide straps, you can sew the fabric wrong sides together and fold the seam allowance inside.

Here are the steps to sew the fabric:
  • For narrow straps:
    1. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, right sides together, and pin along the raw edge.
    2. Sew along the raw edge, using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. You can use a straight stitch or a zigzag stitch, depending on your fabric and preference. Leave both ends open.
    3. Use a loop turner or a safety pin to turn the fabric right side out. Insert the loop turner or the safety pin into one end of the fabric, and push it through the tube until it comes out of the other end. Pull the fabric through the tube and turn it right side out.
    4. Press the strap with an iron to make it flat and neat.
  • For wide straps:
    1. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and pin along the raw edge.
    2. Sew along the raw edge, using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. You can use a straight stitch or a zigzag stitch, depending on your fabric and preference. Leave both ends open.
    3. Fold the seam allowance inside the fabric and press it with an iron. You can also trim the seam allowance to reduce bulk.
    4. Topstitch along the edge of the fabric, using a 1/8 inch seam allowance. You can use a straight stitch or a decorative stitch, depending on your fabric and preference. This will secure the seam allowance and create a nice finish.

Press the straps with an iron

The next step to sew straps is to press them with an iron to make them flat and neat. This will also help to prevent wrinkles and fraying. You can also add some interfacing or elastic to the straps to make them more sturdy and comfortable, depending on the fabric and the style of the straps.

Here are the steps to press the straps with an iron:
  • Set your iron to the appropriate temperature and steam setting for your fabric.
  • Place the strap on an ironing board or a flat surface, and smooth out any wrinkles or folds with your hands.
  • Press the strap with the iron, moving it slowly and evenly along the length of the strap. Be careful not to burn or scorch the fabric or the webbing. You can use a pressing cloth or a parchment paper to protect the fabric and the iron from the glue if you are using a fusible interfacing.
  • Repeat the process for the other side of the strap and for the other straps.

Attach the straps to the garment

The final step to sew straps is to attach them to the garment, following the pattern instructions or your own preference. You can position the straps on the front and back of the garment, or on the side seams, depending on the design. Also you can easily adjust the length of the straps to fit your body. You can sew the straps by hand or by machine, using a straight stitch or a zigzag stitch.

Here are the steps to attach the straps to the garment:
  • Mark the position of the straps on the garment, using a fabric marker or a pin. You can use an existing garment as a reference, or you can measure your own body and add some extra length for seam allowance and adjustment.
  • Place the strap on the right side of the garment, aligning the raw edge of the strap with the raw edge of the garment. Pin the strap in place, making sure it is not twisted or tangled.
  • Sew the strap to the garment, using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. You can use a straight stitch or a zigzag stitch, depending on your fabric and preference. You can also use a backstitch or a lockstitch at the beginning and end of the seam to secure the strap.
  • Repeat the process for the other end of the strap and for the other straps.
  • Trim the excess fabric and webbing, if any, and press the seam with an iron. You can also fold the seam allowance towards the inside of the garment and topstitch along the edge, to create a cleaner and neater finish.
