How to Sew a Double Slit Mini Skirt

Step 1: Download and Print the Free Pattern

Step 3: Cut Out the Fabric Pieces for Double Slit Mini Skirt

Next, you need to cut out the fabric pieces according to the pattern. You should have the following pieces:

• 2 front skirt pieces
• 2 back skirt pieces
• 2 waistband pieces
• 2 interfacing pieces (optional)

If you want to add some stability and structure to your waistband, you can also cut out two interfacing pieces from fusible interfacing and iron them to the wrong side of the waistband pieces.

Step 4: Sew the Darts

The next step is to sew the darts on the front and back skirt pieces. A dart is a triangular fold that helps shape the fabric to your body. To sew a dart, fold the fabric along the dart line, right sides together, and pin it in place. Then, sew along the dart line, starting from the edge and tapering to the point. Tie off the thread and cut the excess. Press the dart towards the center of the skirt. Repeat for the other darts.

Step 5: Sew the Side Seams

Now, you need to sew the side seams of the skirt. To do this, place the front and back skirt pieces right sides together, matching the side edges and the notches. Pin and sew along the side seams, using a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Leave a 7 inch gap on the left side seam for the zipper. Finish the seam allowances with a zigzag stitch or a serger and press them open.

Step 6: Sew the Slits

The next step is to sew the slits on the front of the skirt. A slit is a vertical opening that allows for more movement and style. To sew a slit, fold the fabric along the slit line, wrong sides together, and press it. Then, unfold the fabric and sew along the slit line, starting from the hem and ending 1/4 inch before the fold. Backstitch at the beginning and the end. Cut the fabric along the fold, up to the end of the stitching. Press the seam allowances open and turn them to the wrong side of the fabric. Topstitch along the edge of the slit, 1/8 inch from the edge. Repeat for the other slit.

Step 7: Sew the Waistband

Now, you need to sew the waistband to the skirt. To do this, place the waistband pieces right sides together, matching the short edges. Pin and sew along the short edges, using a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Press the seam allowances open. Fold the waistband in half, wrong sides together, and press it. Then, unfold the waistband and pin it to the top edge of the skirt, right sides together, matching the side seams and the notches. Sew along the top edge, using a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Press the seam allowances up and the waistband down.

Step 8: Sew the Buttonholes and Buttons

The next step is to sew the buttonholes and buttons on the waistband. To do this, you need to use a buttonhole foot, which has a slot that allows the button to fit through.

First steps

First, mark the position and size of the buttonholes on the right side of the waistband, using the pattern as a guide. Then, attach the buttonhole foot to your sewing machine and place the button in the slot. Adjust the stitch length and width according to your machine’s instructions. Place the fabric under the foot, aligning the mark with the center of the foot. Lower the foot and start sewing the buttonhole, following your machine’s instructions. Cut the thread and repeat for the other buttonholes. Then, use a seam ripper to carefully open the buttonholes.

Finishing

Next, mark the position of the buttons on the left side of the waistband, using the buttonholes as a guide. Sew the buttons on by hand or by machine, using a regular foot or a button foot. Make sure the buttons are secure and the buttonholes are aligned.

Step 9: Sew the Zipper

The next step is to sew the zipper to the skirt. To do this, you need to use an invisible zipper foot, which has two grooves that allow the zipper teeth to glide through. First, unzip the zipper and place it on the left side of the skirt, right sides together, matching the top edge of the zipper with the top edge of the waistband. Pin the zipper tape to the seam allowance, making sure the zipper teeth are aligned with the seam line. Then, attach the invisible zipper foot to your sewing machine and sew along the zipper tape, using the left groove of the foot. Stop sewing when you reach the zipper pull. Backstitch and cut the thread. Repeat for the other side of the zipper, using the right groove of the foot. Then, zip up the zipper and check if it works smoothly.

Step 10: Sew the Hem

The final step is to sew the hem of the skirt. To do this, fold the bottom edge of the skirt 1/4 inch to the wrong side of the fabric and press it. Then, fold it again 3/4 inch to the wrong side and press it. Pin the hem in place and sew along the edge, using a straight stitch or a blind hem stitch. Press the hem and remove the pins.
