What is Cottagecore Dress

A cottagecore dress embodies the essence of the cottagecore aesthetic, which romanticizes rural, countryside living. It often features characteristics such as:

  • Full skirts: Providing a flowy, ethereal silhouette.
  • Nature-inspired prints: Floral patterns or gingham checks that reflect the beauty of the outdoors.
  • Pastel or earthy colors: Soft hues that evoke a sense of calm and simplicity.
  • Vintage elements: Lace, ruffles, and peter pan collars for a timeless look.
  • Handmade quality: Emphasizing artisanal craftsmanship and sustainable fashion.

Cottagecore dresses are designed to be simplistic yet chic, capturing the nostalgia and artisan design of the English countryside. They are perfect for those who appreciate the beauty of the countryside and a slower, more intentional way of living.

Measurements you Need for Cottagecore Dress Pattern Drafting

Accurate measurements are super important for drafting a pattern.

Tools and materials you need for measuring yourself
  • A measuring tape
  • A notebook and a pencil
  • A mirror
  • A friend or a helper (optional, but recommended)
To make a blouse pattern, you need to measure the following:
  • Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms.

  • Side seam: Measure from your first marker to where your side’s waist.

Tools and Materials for Pattern Drafting

Pattern drafting allows you to customize the fit and style of your clothing, and express your creativity and personality. To draft your own patterns, you will need some essential tools and materials that will make your work easier and more accurate. Here are the tools and materials you need for pattern drafting:

  • A large flat surface for working: You will need a spacious and smooth surface to lay out your pattern paper and draw your pattern pieces. You can use a table, a desk, a floor, or a cutting mat.
  • A large piece of paper, such as tracing paper, to draw your pattern on.
  • Drafting paper
  • A pencil, preferably with a fine point and a good eraser, to sketch and adjust your pattern lines.
  • Notebook
  • A French curve ruler. Grab my french curved rulers for free here.
  • L ruler
  • A measuring tape, to take your body measurements and check the length and width of your pattern pieces.
  • A pair of scissors, to cut out your pattern pieces and your fabric. Check out my detailed post and learn what scissors are the best for your project.
  • Tracing wheel: You will need a tracing wheel to transfer your pattern markings to another paper or to the fabric. A tracing wheel is a tool that has a serrated or smooth wheel at the end of a handle. You can use it to trace the outline or the details of your pattern piece, such as darts, pleats, or notches. There are two types of tracing wheels: pointed and blunted. A pointed wheel is used to transfer pattern shapes to the paper, while a blunted wheel is used with carbon paper to transfer pattern shapes to the fabric.

Seam Allowance and Ease in Cottagecore Dress Pattern Drafting

Both seam allowance and ease are two important concepts in pattern drafting:

Seam Allowance:

It is the extra area around the pattern pieces that allows you to sew the pieces together without affecting the size of the finished garment. It’s essentially a buffer zone that ensures you have enough fabric to construct the garment properly. The standard seam allowance for most patterns is usually 5/8th of an inch (1.5 cm), but it can vary depending on the garment type or personal preference.

Ease:

Ease is the additional space in a garment that allows for movement and comfort. There are two types of ease: wearing ease and design ease. Wearing ease is the minimal amount of extra space needed to move comfortably in a garment. Design ease is the extra fullness added to create a specific silhouette or style. For example, a cottagecore dress might have more design ease to create a flowy, loose-fitting look.

Both seam allowance and ease are crucial for a well-fitting garment. Seam allowance ensures that the pieces of the garment can be sewn together, while ease allows the garment to fit comfortably and move with the body. When drafting a pattern for a cottagecore dress, you’ll need to consider both to achieve the desired fit and style.

To this pattern I recommend adding 1 cm of seam allowance.
