What is a Side Seam Pocket

Side seam pocket fashion illustration.

side seam pocket is a type of pocket that is incorporated into the side seam of a garment, such as pants, skirts, or dresses. It’s a functional and discreet design element that allows for the addition of pockets without interrupting the flow of the fabric or the garment’s silhouette.

This pocket style is popular because it’s almost invisible from the outside, offering a sleek and clean appearance while being highly practical.

For a complete skirt project using this type of pocket, see my four-tier maxi skirt free pattern in 10 sizes. It combines two roomy side-seam pockets with a separate lining and an elastic waistband.
