- Fabric scraps (Mix and match colors and textures!)
- Zippers (7–9 inches for a small pouch, 10–12 inches for a larger bag)
- Lining fabric (light cotton works great)
- Batting or interfacing (for added structure)
- Sewing Machine:A basic model will do the trick here!
- Thread (match your fabric for a polished look)
- Scissors or rotary cutter
- Pins or fabric clips
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Iron and Ironing Board:Pressing seams is super important in this project.
- Seam Ripper: Mistakes are part of sewing! A seam ripper will help you remove stitches cleanly without damaging your fabric. Learn how to use it here.

Free Pattern for Cosmetic Bags
Step-by-Step Tutorial
Tutorial: Cosmetic Bag #1 – Simple and Stylish
- Place the zipper teeth down on the right side of the outer fabric.
- Next, position the lining fabric on top, ensuring the right sides are facing each other. Align the outer fabric, zipper, and lining neatly, then secure them with clips.
.heic)
- Pin the zipper the same way on both sides and sew.
- Open up the pouch and press the bag at the ironing board.
.heic)
- Topstitching isn’t strictly required, but it is strongly recommended. Without it, the fabric may bunch up and snag on the zipper teeth. You don’t need to sew too close to the zipper, so you can likely stitch along both sides without the slider causing any issues. If you’d prefer to stitch closer to the zipper, simply move the slider out of the way as needed.

- Place the lining and outer fabric right sides together, then sew, leaving a 5 cm | 1.96 in gap in the lining.
.heic)
- Iron the seam in the lining and outer material flat.
- With the right sides together, fold the lining and outer material up to the zipper, creating pleats.

- Pin and sew.
.heic)
- Turn right side out through the gap in the lining.
- Sew up the gap.
