Extra Tips: Printing, Choosing a Size & Seam Allowances

Before you start cutting your fabric, here are a few important tips that will help you avoid mistakes and sew with more confidence.

🖨️ Printing Your Pattern

Downloaded pattern from my site
  • All my sewing patterns are in PDF format and can be printed at home on standard A4
  • Always check the scale before printing! On the first page, you’ll find a test square (usually 2×2 cm or 0.79 x0.79  inches). Measure it with a ruler to make sure it’s accurate.
  • Set your printer to “Actual Size” or “100%” — do not scale to fit.

📏 Choosing the Right Size

Size cahrt to show how to choose right site
  • For woven fabrics (non-stretch):
If your measurements fall between two sizes, choose the larger size. It’s much easier to take a garment in than to make it bigger later.
  • For knit or stretchy fabrics (jersey, elastic materials):
If you’re between sizes, always choose the smaller size. Stretch fabrics are meant to fit close to the body and will naturally expand.

🧵 Seam Allowances

  • Some of my patterns include seam allowances, while others require you to add them yourself.
  • This will always be mentioned on the pattern or in the blog post, so please read carefully before cutting.
  • If seam allowances are not included, here are the standard additions:
    • 1 cm (3/8”) for seams
    • 2–3 cm (3/4″–1″) for hems
    • 0.5–1 cm (1/4″–3/8″) for necklines, sleeves, and details

  1. how do i have free access to the books you reconmmended? i realise i am struggling to think like a tailor, when i see clothes i dont think the way i ought and its limiting me. for instance, once a get a dress or pant thats oversized, i usually give them out, where as i can just downsize or alter it. I stay in Affrica, so i dont think i can get those books around.

    • Thank you for sharing this ,learning to think like a tailor really takes time, and you’re not alone. Oversized clothes are actually great for practice, since you can take them in, reshape them, or alter the fit instead of giving them away. If you’re in Africa and can’t access the books easily, try Open Library, Internet Archive, or searching for free PDFs online, many sewing books are available digitally.
You’re already on the right path just by noticing this mindset shift. Keeping my fingers crossed for you !

    • Hi! Yes , you can still print at 100% scale, but the pattern is currently formatted for A4 paper only, so it may not align correctly on US letter pages just yet. I designed it for A4, and I’m actually working on adding a US letter version soon so it will be easier for everyone to print. Thanks so much for your patience while I finish that update!

    • Hi! 😊 You’ll find the size guide in the shorts tutorial on the site, there’s a full size chart included there to help you pick the right size. Have a look through the post and you should see it before the pattern section.
