In this post, I show you how to sew basic dress with free printable pattern.

Hey ! Do you want to learn how to sew a simple and versatile dress that you can rock all year round? If you answered yes, then you’re in luck, because today I’m going to show you how to make a basic dress using a free PDF pattern that I designed just for you.

The basic dress is a perfect project for beginners, as it doesn’t have any tricky features like zippers, buttons, or darts. It has a sweetheart neckline, short sleeves, and a knee-length hem. You can easily modify the pattern to create different styles, such as adding pockets, changing the length, or adding a collar.

One of the best things about this dress is that you can make it with different fabrics depending on the season. For example, you can use light and breezy fabrics like cotton, linen, or rayon for summer, or cozy and warm fabrics like flannel, wool, or velvet for winter. You can also choose different colors and prints to suit your mood and personality.

How to add seam allowance in sewing

If you are ready to start sewing, follow these steps:

Seam Allowance

For this project, I recommend adding 1 cm | 0.4 in of seam allowance to all the edges of the pattern pieces. This will give you enough room to stitch the seams without compromising the fit.

You can use a ruler or a tape measure to mark the seam allowance on your fabric. Alternatively, you can use a special sewing tool called a seam gauge, which has markings for different seam allowances.

How to add seam allowance in sewing

Step 1: Print and Cut the Pattern

The pattern has four pieces: front, back, sleeve, and neck facing. After adding seam allowance cut out each piece along the line that corresponds to your size. You can also trace the pieces on another paper if you want to keep the original pattern intact.

Step 2: Cut the Fabric

Before cutting the fabric, make sure to wash and iron it to prevent any shrinkage or distortion later. Fold the fabric in half with the right sides together and the selvages aligned. Place the pattern pieces on the fabric as shown in the diagram below. Pin the pieces to the fabric and cut around them. You should have one front piece, one back piece, two sleeve pieces, and one neck facing piece. Don’t forget to mark the notches and the center front and back with a small snip or a tailor’s chalk.

Step 3: Sew the Shoulder Seams

With the right sides together, pin the front and back pieces along the shoulder seams. Sew with a 5/8 inch seam allowance and finish the edges with a zigzag stitch or a serger. Press the seams open or towards the back.

Step 4: Attach the Neck Facing

With the right sides together, pin the neck facing to the neckline of the dress, matching the notches and the center front and back. Sew with a 5/8 inch seam allowance and clip the curves. Understitch the facing by sewing close to the seam line on the facing side, catching the seam allowance underneath. This will help the facing stay inside and prevent it from peeking out. Press the facing to the inside of the dress and topstitch along the edge if you like.

Step 5: Sew the Side Seams

With the right sides together, pin the front and back pieces along the side seams, matching the notches and the underarm points. Sew with a 5/8 inch seam allowance and finish the edges. Press the seams open or towards the back.

Step 6: Attach the Sleeves

With the right sides together, pin the sleeve pieces to the armholes of the dress, matching the notches and the center of the sleeve to the shoulder seam. Ease the sleeve cap to fit the armhole and distribute the fabric evenly. Sew with a 5/8 inch seam allowance and finish the edges. Press the seams towards the sleeve.

Step 7: Hem the Sleeves and the Dress

Fold the edge of the sleeve to the wrong side by 1/4 inch and press. Fold again by 5/8 inch and press. Stitch along the inner fold to create a hem. Repeat for the other sleeve.

Fold the edge of the dress to the wrong side by 1/2 inch and press. Fold again by 1 inch and press. Stitch along the inner fold to create a hem.

Step 8: Press and Enjoy

Give your dress a final press and admire your work. You have just made a basic dress that you can wear for any occasion. Style it with different accessories, such as a belt, a scarf, a hat, or a necklace, to create different looks. You can also layer it with a cardigan, a jacket, or a coat for cooler weather.

Materials

Choosing the right fabric for your dress is crucial, especially when considering the season. Here are our recommendations:

  • Spring: Opt for light and breathable fabrics such as cotton, linen, or rayon. These fabrics will keep you cool and comfortable during the warmer months.
  • Summer: Similar to spring, lightweight fabrics like cotton voile, chambray, or lightweight jersey are ideal for summer dresses.
  • Fall: As the weather cools down, consider using slightly heavier fabrics such as wool blends, flannel, or medium-weight jersey.
  • Winter: For colder months, choose warm and cozy fabrics like wool, cashmere, or heavy-weight jersey to keep you snug.
