Planning Your Bust Dart Placement

Before diving into the dart-adding process, take the time to plan out the placement of your bust darts. Consider your body measurements, garment design, and desired fit. Optimal dart placement will vary depending on individual preferences and garment styles.

There are two main types of bust darts: underarm bust darts and French bust darts. Underarm bust darts are drawn on the bust line, and they point towards the bust point. French bust darts are drawn from the bust line, closer to the waist line, and they also point towards the bust point.

The choice of bust dart type depends on the shape and size of your bust, the style and fit of your garment, and the look you want to achieve. Generally, underarm bust darts are more suitable for smaller busts, as they create a subtle curve and lift. French bust darts are more suitable for larger busts, as they provide more support and coverage.

You can also experiment with different dart angles, lengths, and widths to find the best fit and look for your body and garment. The key is to make sure that the dart ends at least 1 inch away from the bust point, to avoid creating a pointy or puckered effect.

Step-by-Step Guide to Adding Bust Darts

Once you have decided on the type and placement of your bust darts, you can follow these steps to add them to your bodice pattern:

Measure from neck base to bust point.

This is the distance from the base of your neck to the center of your bust, where your nipple is. You can use a measuring tape or a ruler to measure this distance on your body, or on a dress form that matches your size. Write down this measurement, as you will need it later.

Draw a line above the bust.

On your bodice pattern, draw a horizontal line across the front piece, parallel to the bottom edge. This line should be slightly above the bust level, and it should intersect with the side seam and the center front. This is the bust line, where you will draw your bust darts.

Mark the bust point.

On the bust line, mark the point where your bust point is located. You can use the measurement from step 1 to find this point, or you can use a tracing wheel or a pin to transfer the bust point from your body or dress form to the pattern. The bust point is the tip of your bust dart, where it points towards the center of your bust.

Draw the bust dart.

Depending on the type of bust dart you want to add, you can draw it in one of two ways:

For an underarm bust dart,

draw a straight line from the bust point to the bust line, on the side seam. This is the dart leg. Then, draw another straight line from the bust point to the bust line, parallel to the dart leg. This is the dart fold. The distance between the dart leg and the dart fold is the dart width. The angle between the dart leg and the dart fold is the dart angle. The length of the dart leg and the dart fold is the dart length.

Cut the bust dart.

Cut along the dart leg and the dart fold, leaving a small hinge at the bust point. This will allow you to fold the dart and create a 3D shape on your pattern.

How to Find Your Bust Dart Width

The bust dart width is the distance between the dart leg and the dart fold. It determines how much fabric is taken in by the dart, and how much curve and shape it creates on the bust. The bust dart width depends on the size and shape of your bust, and the fit and style of your garment.

There is no fixed rule for finding the perfect bust dart width, but there are some general guidelines you can follow:

  • The larger your bust, the wider your bust dart should be. This will help you create more support and coverage for your bust, and avoid gaping or wrinkling on the bodice.
  • The smaller your bust, the narrower your bust dart should be. This will help you create a subtle curve and lift for your bust, and avoid flattening or distorting it.
  • The looser your garment, the narrower your bust dart should be. This will help you create a relaxed and comfortable fit, and avoid creating too much shape or structure on the bodice.
  • The tighter your garment, the wider your bust dart should be. This will help you create a fitted and flattering fit, and avoid creating too little shape or structure on the bodice.

To find your bust dart width, you can use a bust dart width chart and photo, like the ones below. This chart shows the recommended bust dart width for different bust sizes and garment types. You can use this chart as a starting point, and adjust the bust dart width according to your preferences and needs.
