Step-by-Step Instructions:

Follow this step-by-step guide and use my free sewing pattern available in 8 sizes.

1. Waist Measurement:
Measuring waist with a tape measure for maxi tiered skirt sewing pattern

Measure your waist where you want the skirt to sit. Add 1-2 inches to this measurement for comfort.

2. Skirt Length:

Decide the overall length of your skirt. Divide this length by the number of tiers you want. Typically, a three-tiered skirt is flattering.

3. Cutting the Tiers:
Schemat of tiers
Cutting fabric for tiers of maxi tiered skirt
  • Tier 1: Cut a rectangle of fabric with a width of 1.5 times your waist measurement and the height of the first tier length.
  • Tier 2: Cut a rectangle with a width of 2 times your waist measurement and the height of the second tier length.
  • Tier 3: Cut a rectangle with a width of 2.5 times your waist measurement and the height of the third tier length.
4. Attaching Pockets:
Sewing pockets onto side seams of first tier
  • On the first tier, mark the placement of the pockets on the side seams, about 2-3 inches below the waistband.
  • Sew the pockets to the side seams of the first tier, right sides together.

Check out my detailed step by step post on how to sew and attach slash pockets to your skirt here.

5. Sewing and Attaching the Tiers:

  • Gathering the Fabric: For each tier, run two rows of basting stitches along the top edge. Leave long thread tails for gathering. Pull the threads to gather the fabric until it matches the width of the tier above it.
  • Attaching the Tiers: Pin the gathered edge of the second tier to the bottom edge of the first tier, right sides together. Sew the two pieces together. Repeat this process to attach the third tier to the second tier.

7. Creating the Elastic Waistband:
Folding and sewing waistband casing for elastic insertion
  • Measuring and Cutting Elastic: Measure your waist and cut the elastic to your waist measurement minus 1-2 inches for a snug fit.
  • Creating the Casing: Fold the top edge of the first tier over to the wrong side, wide enough to accommodate the elastic plus 1/4 inch seam allowance. Sew along the edge, leaving a small opening to insert the elastic.
  • Inserting Elastic: Attach a safety pin or bodkin to one end of the elastic and thread it through the casing. Overlap the ends of the elastic by about 1/2 inch and sew them together securely. Sew the opening in the casing closed.

  • Twisted Elastic: Be careful to keep the elastic flat when threading through the casing.

Advanced Techniques

  • French Seams: For a cleaner finish, use French seams on the side seams.
  • Decorative Elements: Add lace or ruffles to the tiers for a more decorative look.
  • Adjustable Waistband: Add buttonholes and buttons to make the waistband adjustable.

How to Style Tiered Maxi Skirt

Styling a tiered maxi skirt can be fun and versatile, allowing you to create a variety of looks for different occasions. Here are some tips and ideas to help you style your tiered maxi skirt:

Casual Chic
  • T-Shirt and Sneakers: Pair your tiered maxi skirt with a simple, fitted t-shirt and white sneakers for a comfortable and stylish everyday look.
  • Denim Jacket: Add a denim jacket over a tank top or t-shirt for a casual, layered outfit that works well in transitional weather.
Boho Vibes
  • Peasant Blouse: Combine your skirt with a peasant blouse or a loose, off-the-shoulder top to enhance the bohemian feel.
  • Sandals: Opt for flat, strappy sandals or gladiator sandals to complete the laid-back, boho look.
  • Accessories: Add boho accessories like layered necklaces, bangles, and a wide-brimmed hat.
Dressy and Elegant
  • Fitted Blouse: Choose a fitted blouse or a sleek top that tucks into the skirt to create a polished silhouette.
  • Heels: Elevate your look with a pair of heels or wedges to add height and sophistication.
  • Statement Jewelry: Incorporate statement earrings or a bold necklace to add a touch of glamour.
Professional Look
  • Blazer: Wear a tailored blazer over a tucked-in blouse to make your tiered maxi skirt office-appropriate.
  • Closed-Toe Shoes: Pair with closed-toe pumps or loafers for a professional appearance.
  • Minimal Accessories: Keep accessories minimal and elegant, such as a delicate watch or stud earrings.
Seasonal Styling
Additional Tips
  • Balance the Volume: Since tiered maxi skirts have a lot of volume, balance it out with more fitted tops to avoid looking overwhelmed by fabric.

By mixing and matching different tops, shoes, and accessories, you can create numerous outfits with your tiered maxi skirt, making it a versatile piece in your wardrobe.
