How to Sew a Balloon Mini Skirt: Step by Step

Sewing the Skirt Outer Fabric

• Start by cutting the fabric according to the balloon skirt pattern. Remember, fabric amount recommendations depend on the size, so be sure to check the pattern for exact measurements.
• Place the right sides of the outer fabric together, pin along the edges, and sew the sides, leaving space for the pockets.

Sewing the Pockets

• Measure 7 cm | 2.7 in from the waist, and mark the spot for the pocket on both sides.
• With the right sides together, pin the pockets onto the side seams of the skirt.
• Sew the pockets in place.

Hemming and Gathering the Skirt Outer Fabric

• For the hem, sew a loose, gathering stitch around the bottom edge.

Sewing the Lining with the Skirt

• Next, gather the skirt fabric to match the width of the lining’s bottom edge.
• Pin the right sides together and sew along the gathered seam to attach the lining to the outer skirt fabric.

• Sew the second part of the skirt the same way, ensuring both the outer material and the lining are sewn together neatly at the sides.
• Turn the skirt right side out, and line up the top edge of the skirt with the lining.

Sewing the Waistband

• Fold the top edge of the skirt inward by 1 cm | 0.39 in, including the lining.

• Cut the elastic to your waist circumference and 4 cm | 1.57 in wide.
• Sew the top edge of the waistband, leaving a 4 cm | 1.57 in gap.
• Below the waistband, create an elastic tunnel that’s 5 cm | 1.96 in wide.

Thread the elastic through the gap, sew the ends of the elastic together, and close the gap.

• Press the waistband flat.

And voilà! You’re ready to wear your new balloon skirt—perfect for any occasion!
