• Waist: Measure around your natural waistline, where your belly button is.

• Hips: Measure around the widest part of your hips, below your waist.

How to Self-Draft a Palazzo Pants Sewing Pattern

If you love stylish and comfortable wide-leg pants, drafting your own palazzo pants pattern is a great way to get a custom fit. This step-by-step guide will walk you through how to create a sewing pattern for wide-leg pants based on your own measurements.

Remember to use your own measurements. The measurements given below are only examples!

Drafting the Wide-Leg Pants Pattern

Front Pants

Step 1: Measure the Pants Length

• Measure the length from your waist to your ankle.

Example:

• Pants length: 100 cm | 39 in.

Step 2: Drafting the Waistline

• Measure your hip circumference (this is measured around the fullest part of your buttocks).

Example:

• Hip circumference: 98 cm
• 1/4 of hip measurement: 98 cm ÷ 4 = 24.5 cm
• Add 7 cm (2.75 in) for ease: 24.5 cm + 7 cm = 31.5 cm

Step 3: Drawing to the Hipline

1. Draw a vertical line from the waist measuring 1/4 of the hip circumference + 4 cm (1.57 in).Example:
   • 1/4 hips measurement: 24.5 cm + 4 cm = 28.5 cm
2. Draw the hipline by marking 1/4 hip measurement + 7 cm (2.75 in).Example:
   • 1/4 hips: 24.5 cm + 7 cm = 31.5 cm
3. Measure and mark the waist-to-hip length.Example:
   • Waist to hip length: 20 cm | 7.87 in
4. Draw another horizontal line at the hip level using the 1/4 hips + 7 cm (2.75 in) measurement.

Step 4: Extend the Front Crotch

1. Divide your hip measurement by 20.Example:
   • 98 cm ÷ 20 = 4.9 cm
2. Draw 4.9 cm outward from the center front and connect it to the waistline with a curved line.
3. Smooth and round the front crotch line for a natural shape.

Step 5: Side Waist Adjustments

1. At the waistline from the side, subtract 2 cm (0.787 in).
2. Connect this point to the crotch line with a smooth curve.

6 Step : Front Drop Waist Adjustment

1. At the waistline, on the crotch side, subtract 1 cm down.
2. Connect this to the side seam to create a slight dip in the waistline.

Step 7: Drawing the Waist Pleats

1.To calculate the waist pleats, use:

• Waistline measurement – 1/4 hip measurement
• Divide by 2

Example:

• Waistline: 26 cm
• 1/4 hip measurement: 17 cm
• Difference: 9 cm ÷ 2 = 4.5 cm

2. Mark the center front of the pattern.

3. From the center, measure 2 cm on each side, then mark a 4.5 cm pleat on either side.

4. Pleat length: 4 cm (1.57 in).

Step 8: Drawing the Pants Hemline

1. Use 1/4 hip measurement + 1 cm (0.39 in).Example:
   • 24.5 cm + 1 cm = 25.5 cm
2. Connect the hemline to the crotch line with a smooth curve.

Back Pants Pattern Drafting

Step 1: Measure the Pants Length

• Use the same length measurement as the front.

Example:

• 100 cm | 39 in.

Step 2: Drafting the Waistline

• Use the same hip circumference measurement as the front.

Example:

• 1/4 hips + 7 cm (2.75 in) = 31.5 cm

Step 3: Drawing to the Hipline

1. Draw a vertical line using 1/4 hip measurement + 4 cm (1.57 in).Example:
   • 24.5 cm + 4 cm = 28.5 cm
2. Draw the hipline using 1/4 hips + 7 cm (2.75 in).Example:
   • 31.5 cm

Step 4: Extend the Back Crotch

1. Divide your hip measurement by 10.Example:
   • 98 cm ÷ 10 = 9.8 cm
2. Extend the back crotch by 9.8 cm and connect to the hip line.
3. Round the back crotch curve smoothly.

5 Step : Adjusting the Side Waist

• Subtract 2 cm from the side waistline.

Step 6: Waistline Adjustments

1. From the side, draw a line 1/4 waist circumference + 4 cm (1.57 in) for the waist dart.
2. On the crotch side, add 2 cm (0.787 in) up at the waist and connect it to the side seam.
3. Connect the waistline to the crotch smoothly.

Step 7: Drawing the Waist Dart

1. Mark the center of the waistline.
2. Draw a dart 4 cm wide (1.57 in) and 12 cm long (4.7 in).

Final Step: Adding Seam Allowances

1. Add 1 cm (0.39 in) seam allowance all around the pattern.
2. Add 4 cm (1.57 in) seam allowance at the bottom hem for adjustments.
