Best Fabrics for Wrap Blouse
The best fabric for a wrap blouse depends on the look and feel you want to achieve, as well as the weather and the level of difficulty. Here are some factors to consider when choosing the fabric for a wrap top:
- The weight of the fabric affects how it drapes and flows on your body. A light to medium weight fabric is ideal for a wrap top, as it creates a soft and fluid silhouette. A heavy weight fabric may be too stiff and bulky for a wrap top, and may not wrap well around your curves.
- The stretch of the fabric affects how it fits and moves with your body. A fabric with some stretch is recommended for a wrap top, as it allows for more ease and comfort. A fabric with too much stretch may be too clingy and revealing for a wrap top, and may not hold its shape well.
- The texture of the fabric affects how it looks and feels on your skin. A smooth and silky fabric can give a wrap top a sleek and elegant look, while a textured and cozy fabric can give a wrap top a casual and warm look. A fabric with a lot of texture may also add some interest and dimension to a simple wrap top design.
- Pattern: The pattern of the fabric affects how it complements your style and personality. A solid color fabric can give a wrap top a classic and versatile look, while a printed fabric can give a wrap top a fun and unique look. A fabric with a large or busy pattern may not be suitable for a wrap top, as it may distort or clash with the wrap design.
Based on these factors, some of the best fabrics for a wrap top are:
- Rib knit fabric. It is a type of knitted fabric that features raised vertical ribs. These ribs are formed by alternating knit and purl stitches, which are aligned perpendicular to the direction of the fabric. This construction gives rib knit fabric several distinct characteristics, such as a high elasticity, a distinctive textured appearance, and a soft feel. Rib knit fabric can be made from different fibers, such as cotton, wool, or synthetic materials.
- Ribbed jersey. This fabric is a type of jersey fabric that has a ribbed or corded effect on the surface. It is similar to rib knit fabric, but it is usually lighter and thinner. Ribbed jersey is also very stretchy and has good drape qualities.Ribbed jersey can also be made from different fibers, such as cotton, linen, rayon, or polyester. Ribbed jersey has a smooth and flat surface, unlike rib knit fabric, which has a textured and ridged surface

Seam Allowance
One important thing to remember when using the pdf patterns is that you need to add some seam allowance to them. Seam allowance is the extra fabric that you need to sew the pieces together.
For this project, I recommend adding 1 cm | 0.4 in of seam allowance to all the edges of the pattern pieces. This will give you enough room to stitch the seams without compromising the fit.
You can use a ruler or a tape measure to mark the seam allowance on your fabric. Alternatively, you can use a special sewing tool called a seam gauge, which has markings for different seam allowances.
Adding seam allowance is a simple but essential step in sewing. It will ensure that your bustier turns out the right size and shape.

How to Sew Wrap Blouse
Cut out the fabric pieces according to the pattern.
You should have the following pieces:
- 2 front bodice pieces
- 1 back bodice piece
- 2 sleeve pieces
- 2 sash pieces
Sew the shoulder seams of the bodice.
To do this, place the front and back bodice pieces right sides together, matching the shoulder edges. Pin and sew along the shoulder seams, using a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Finish the seam allowances with a zigzag stitch or a serger and press them open.
Hem the sleeve edges.
Make it by folding the bottom edge of the sleeve 1/4 inch to the wrong side of the fabric and press it. Then, fold it again 1/2 inch to the wrong side and press it. Pin the hem in place and sew along the edge, using a straight stitch or a twin needle. Press the hem and remove the pins. Repeat for the other sleeve.
Sew the sash pieces.
Place the sash pieces right sides together, matching the long edges. Pin and sew along the long edges, using a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Leave a 3 inch gap on one of the edges for turning. Trim the seam allowances and turn the sash right side out through the gap. Press the sash and hand stitch the gap closed.
Attach the sash to the bodice.
Mark the center of the back bodice and the center of the sash. Pin the sash to the back bodice, right sides together, matching the centers and the raw edges. Sew along the raw edge, using a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Press the seam allowances up and the sash down.
Sew the side seams of the bodice.
Place the front and back bodice pieces right sides together, matching the side edges and the sash edges. Pin and sew along the side seams, using a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Finish the seam allowances with a zigzag stitch or a serger and press them open.
Set in the sleeves.
Place the sleeve and the bodice right sides together, matching the armhole edges and the notches. Pin and sew along the armhole edge, using a 5/8 inch seam allowance. Finish the seam allowances with a zigzag stitch or a serger and press them towards the sleeve. Repeat for the other sleeve.
Hem the bottom edge of the bodice.
Fold the bottom edge of the bodice 1/4 inch to the wrong side of the fabric and press it. Then, fold it again 1/2 inch to the wrong side and press it. Pin the hem in place and sew along the edge, using a straight stitch or a twin needle. Press the hem and remove the pins.
