Gianni-inspired

Gianni is a Dutch designer company that is known for its playful and feminine designs, featuring ruffles, bows, and prints. This top is perfect for any season and occasion, as you can style it with jeans, skirts, or shorts.

In this tutorial, I will show you how to sew your own gianni-inspired puff sleeve top using unstretchy cotton fabric. This fabric is ideal for this project, as it gives the top a nice structure and shape. You can choose any color or print you like, as long as it is not too thin or sheer.

Best Fabrics for Puff Sleeve Top

The best fabrics for puff sleeve tops are lightweight and mediumweight fabrics, either knit or woven, that are quite soft and can hold a crease. Some examples are:

Floral design cotton and linien fabrics.
  • Cotton lawn, voile, or shirting: These are breathable and crisp fabrics that can create a nice structure and shape for the puff sleeves. They also come in a variety of colors and prints to suit your preference.
  • Linen or linen-rayon blends: These are natural and durable fabrics that have a lovely drape and texture. They can also keep you cool and comfortable in warmer weather.
  • Rayon challis, viscose, or tencel: These are smooth and silky fabrics that have a beautiful flow and movement. They can also add some shine and elegance to your puff sleeve blouse.
  • Lightweight silk or chiffon: These are luxurious and delicate fabrics that can create a soft and romantic look for your puff sleeve blouse. They can also be sheer or opaque, depending on your desired level of coverage.
Fabric Quantity:

For a blouse with a peplum and puff sleeves, you’ll generally need around 1.5 to 2 yards (1.4 to 1.8 meters) of fabric, but the exact amount depends on a few factors:

Size of the Blouse: Larger sizes typically require more fabric.
Peplum Length: A longer or fuller peplum will require more fabric.
Sleeve Fullness and Length: Puff sleeves use more fabric due to gathering, so longer or fuller sleeves will add to the total fabric needed.
Here’s a rough guide based on size and design:

Small to Medium Sizes: 1.5 yards (1.4 meters)
Medium to Large Sizes: 1.75 to 2 yards (1.6 to 1.8 meters)
Extra Large and Above: Consider adding an extra half yard to ensure you have enough for the sleeves and peplum.

Seam Allowance

One important thing to remember when using the pdf patterns is that you need to add some seam allowance to them. Seam allowance is the extra fabric that you need to sew the pieces together.

For this project, I recommend adding 1 cm | 0.4 in of seam allowance to all the edges of the pattern pieces. This will give you enough room to stitch the seams without compromising the fit.

You can use a ruler or a tape measure to mark the seam allowance on your fabric. Alternatively, you can use a special sewing tool called a seam gauge, which has markings for different seam allowances.

Adding seam allowance is a simple but essential step in sewing. It will ensure that your top turns out the right size and shape.

How to Style Puff Sleeve Top

Puff sleeve tops are a great way to add some flair and femininity to your outfit. They can make a statement on their own, or complement other pieces in your wardrobe. Here are some tips on how to style puff sleeve tops for different occasions and seasons:

For a casual look,

pair a puff sleeve top with jeans, sneakers, and a crossbody bag. You can choose a denim or solid color top, or go for a floral or striped print for some extra fun. Tuck the top into your jeans, or leave it loose for a relaxed vibe.

For a work-appropriate look,

wear a puff sleeve top with a pencil skirt, pumps, and a blazer. You can opt for a neutral or pastel color top, or a subtle pattern like polka dots or checks. Make sure the top fits well at the waist, and the sleeves are not too long or voluminous.

For a date night look,

style a puff sleeve top with a midi skirt, heels, and a clutch. You can choose a silk or chiffon top, or a lace or ruffle detail for some romance. You can also add some jewelry, like a necklace or earrings, to accentuate the neckline of the top.

For a winter look,

layer a puff sleeve top over a turtleneck, and pair it with pants, boots, and a coat. You can pick a cozy or textured fabric for the top, like wool or velvet, or a festive color like red or green. You can also add a scarf or a hat for some extra warmth and style.

These are some of the ways you can wear puff sleeve tops and create different looks. Puff sleeve tops are versatile and fun, and they can suit any style and personality.
