What is Lace Up Corset Top

Fashion illustration of lace up corset top.

A lace-up corset top is a type of clothing that shapes or constricts the waist and supports the bosom. It can be worn as a foundation garment under clothes or as an outer decoration. Traditionally, corsets were made stiff with heavy boning to mold a woman’s upper body into a desired shape, often a V-shape, and to flatten and push up the breasts. Modern lace-up corset tops may feature lace panels or overlays, combining the classic corset design with the delicate beauty of lace fabric12. They are popular for their ability to create a defined silhouette and are often worn for fashion, historical costuming, or as part of a lingerie ensemble2.

Materials & Tools Needed:

To sew a lace-up corset top, you’ll need the following materials and tools:

Seam Allowance

I suggest including an additional 1 cm | 0.4 in of seam allowance to the pattern pieces for this project. This extra allowance will provide ample space for sewing the seams without affecting the overall fit.

You may utilize a ruler or tape measure to indicate the seam allowance on the fabric. Another option is to use a seam gauge tool, specifically designed for measuring different seam allowances. Incorporating seam allowance is a crucial yet straightforward process in sewing. It guarantees that your garment will be the correct size and shape.

Sewing Tips:

  • Remember to take accurate measurements of your body before you start sewing. The corset should be fitted but not too tight.
  • When selecting fabric, pay attention to its quality. A corset is a garment that requires durable and strong material.
  • While sewing eyelets, ensure they are evenly spaced and securely attached to prevent them from tearing out during lacing.
