In this post, you’ll learn how to sew mens shorts with a free pattern.

Sewing mens shorts might look like a big project, but trust me — once you get into the rhythm of it, it’s honestly kind of fun. This tutorial was born in the Sparrow Refashion studio after I kept getting messages from men saying, “Hey… do you ever sew stuff for us?” So here we are — mens shorts, simple, comfy, and surprisingly satisfying to make.

Fabric Recommendation & Quantity for Mens Shots

Sustainble fabrics from second hand shops on table reay to be used to sew a dress

Choosing the right fabric is the secret to making mens shorts that feel good and last a long time. Since these shorts are meant to be comfy, breathable, and wearable in everyday life, I recommend selecting a fabric that has a bit of structure but still feels soft on the skin. Think casual, relaxed, and easy to move in.

Some great options are:

  • Cotton twill — sturdy, classic, and perfect for everyday shorts
  • Linen blend — lightweight, breathable, and amazing for warm weather
  • Light denim or chambray — durable but still easy to sew
  • Cotton poplin or woven cotton — great if you want something light and simple

If linen is the fabric you really want to use, I also created a separate free men’s linen shorts pattern designed specifically around a relaxed summer fit, side-seam pockets and a drawstring waistband.

Pick a fabric that matches the vibe you want — casual, dressy, beachy, sporty — and always pre-wash it so there are no surprises after the first wash.

Before you start cutting, make sure you have enough fabric for all the pieces — including the waistband casing, pockets, and seam allowances. Below are the recommended amounts for 150 cm (60”) wide fabric. If you’re working with prints, stripes, or a fabric that tends to shrink, it’s always a good idea to grab a little extra.

Fabric Requirements

SizeFabric (Yards)Fabric (Meters)
XS1.5 yd1.4 m
S1.6 yd1.5 m
M1.7 yd1.6 m
L1.8 yd1.6 m
XL1.9 yd1.7 m
XXL2.0 yd1.8 m

Tip: If you’re sewing with directional prints (like stripes or palm leaves), want deeper pockets, or prefer a longer inseam, add at least 0.2–0.3 meters (¼ yard) of extra fabric. It’s always better to have more than not enough — especially when you’re making something handmade and special.

Sustainable Fabric Choices (Upcycling Options)

If you love sewing with a lighter footprint, you can absolutely make these mens shorts using upcycled materials. One of my favorite sustainable hacks in the Sparrow Refashion studio is to repurpose old textiles — they’re budget-friendly, earth-friendly, and often surprisingly high quality.

You can use things like:

  • Old bedsheets — crisp, soft, and perfect for lightweight shorts
  • A large cotton tablecloth — great if you want a bit more structure
  • Men’s XL shirts — perfect for patchwork or panels
  • Linen curtains — soft, airy, and usually wide enough for pattern pieces

Just make sure the fabric is woven (not stretchy) and still in good condition with no thinning or weak spots.

How Much Upcycled Material You’ll Need

Because items like sheets and tablecloths come in all shapes and sizes, here’s a simple guide to help you know what works:

  • Twin bedsheet → enough for XS–M
  • Full/Double bedsheet → enough for XS–L, sometimes XL
  • Queen/King bedsheet → enough for all sizes so even larger size, with leftover fabric for pockets
  • Large tablecloth (150×200 cm / 60×80”) → fits XS–M
  • Extra-large tablecloth (160×240 cm / 63×95”) → fits XS–XL
  • Linen curtains (a single long panel) → usually fits XS–L, depending on width

If you’re piecing fabric together — which looks beautiful and very “Sparrow Refashion” — just treat your panels like regular fabric and cut the pattern pieces from them once they’re joined.

Upcycling Tips

  • Pre-wash everything (especially sheets!) to remove softeners and shrink the fabric.
  • Check for worn-out areas and avoid cutting pattern pieces there.
  • Play with placement — hems from old curtains make great built-in edges for pockets.
  • Color-blocking with two old shirts makes the shorts look modern and intentional.

Making mens shorts from upcycled fabric isn’t just sustainable — it’s creative, fun, and gives your finished piece a story. And honestly? Some of the best shorts I’ve ever sewn came from thrifted sheets.

What Measurements You’ll Need to Pick the Right Pattern Size for Mens Shorts Sewing Pattern

hips measuring to choose best size of mesn shorts pattern

For this pattern, you only need one main body measurement:

Hip Measurement

Measure around the fullest part of the hips and seat.

  • Keep the tape measure level and not too tight.
  • Stand with feet together for an accurate number.

Your hip measurement is what determines which size you should choose from the pattern.

What About the Waist?

No need to measure it for sizing — the waistband is elastic, and in the tutorial (both photo and video) you’ll see exactly how to cut and adjust the elastic to the perfect length for a comfortable fit.

Cut Out Your Fabric Pieces

Using your printed pattern, cut:

How to cut fabric for men’s shorts using a free sewing pattern.
  • 2x Front pieces
  • 2x Back pieces
  • 2x Pocket bags
  • 2x Pocket facings

Optional: Drawstring casing (if adding drawstring)

Tip: Always double-check your cutting direction. The waistband should stretch around the body, not lengthwise.

How to Attach the Pocket to the Front Shorts

1. Position the Pocket

  • Place the pocket piece right sides together with the front shorts piece.
  • Measure 8 cm (≈ 3 ⅛ inches) down from the waistline and align the pocket at that point.
  • Pin it securely in place so it doesn’t shift while sewing.

2. Stitch the Pocket Opening

Sew a rectangular stitching line that will form the pocket entry. Use these measurements:

  • 2 cm (≈ ¾ inch) from the top edge of the pocket
  • 1.5 cm (≈ ⅝ inch) inward (this is the pocket opening depth)
  • 14 cm (≈ 5 ½ inches) long (this is the hand opening)

This stitched rectangle creates the foundation for a clean, professional pocket.

3. Cut & Turn the Pocket

  • Carefully cut along the center of the stitched rectangle (the 14 cm length).
  • Snip into the corners at a diagonal, stopping right before the stitching — this helps the opening turn neatly.
  • Pull the entire pocket piece through the opening to the wrong side of the shorts.
  • Press everything flat — this step is key for a crisp finish.
  • Topstitch around the pocket opening to keep it secure and add durability.

4. Attach the Pocket Facing

  • Place the pocket facing piece right sides together with the pocket bag.
  • Sew all the way around the pocket shape.
  • Press the seam and finish the raw edges with a zigzag stitch or a serger.

At this point, your front pocket is fully enclosed, neatly finished, and ready for the rest of the shorts construction!

Sewing the Sides of the Shorts

1. Align the Shorts Pieces

  • Lay both shorts pieces flat on your table.
  • Place the front pieces right sides together and the back pieces right sides together.
  • Make sure all edges line up neatly so your seams stay accurate.

2. Sew the Front Center Seam

  • Pin along the front center curve to keep the fabric steady.
  • Stitch from the waistline all the way down to the crotch in one smooth line.
  • Press the seam open or to one side — whichever feels easiest for your fabric.

3. Sew the Back Center Seam

  • Repeat the same process with the back pieces:
    • Pin the back center seam
    • Stitch from the waistline down to the crotch curve
  • Give the seam a good press for a cleaner finish and easier assembly later.

Sew the Front and Back Together at the Crotch Curve

1. Prepare the Shorts Pieces

  • Once both front and back pieces are sewn at the side seams (with pockets attached), lay one shorts panel flat on your table — right side facing up.
  • Place the second shorts panel right on top, right sides together.
Back shorts pieces aligned and sewn together for men’s shorts pattern.

2. Align the Crotch Curves

  • Match the front crotch curve to front crotch curve and the back crotch curve to back crotch curve.
  • Smooth the fabric so the curves line up cleanly.
  • Pin along the entire crotch line to keep the shape stable while sewing.

3. Sew the Crotch Seam

  • Starting at the back waistline, sew smoothly down the curve, through the crotch point, and continue up to the front waistline.
  • This should be one continuous, rounded seam.
Joining the front and back crotch curve on handmade men’s shorts.

4. Finish the Seam

  • Finish the raw edges with a zigzag stitch or a serger to prevent fraying.
  • Press the seam to keep everything neat and comfortable to wear.

Sew the Inner Leg Seam

1. Open the Shorts

  • Lay the shorts open so the crotch seam sits in the center and forms a diamond shape.
  • You should see both front and back pieces connected at the crotch but the legs still open.

2. Align the Inner Leg Edges

Bring the two leg halves together, matching:

  • Inner leg seams
  • Crotch seam (this should meet perfectly in the middle)
  • Hem edges

Smooth everything flat so the curves line up nicely.

3. Pin and Sew the Seam

  • Pin from one hem, up the inner leg, through the crotch, and then back down the other leg to the opposite hem.
  • Sew this entire inner-leg seam in one continuous line for strength and a smooth finish.

4. Finish and Press

  • Finish the raw edges with a zigzag stitch or serger.
  • Press the seam toward the back of the shorts.

Now the main body of your shorts is fully assembled.

Hem the Shorts

1. Prepare the Shorts

  • Turn the shorts wrong side out so the raw edges at the leg openings are visible.

2. Fold the Hem

Create a clean, double-fold hem:

How to fold and press the hem on men’s shorts.
  • First fold the fabric up 5 cm (2 inches).
  • Then fold it up again by 1 cm (⅜ inch) to enclose the raw edge inside the hem.
  • Pin all the way around both leg openings to hold the folds in place.

3. Sew and Press

  • Stitch the hem around each leg, keeping your seam even and smooth.
  • Press the finished hem — this gives the shorts a crisp, polished look and helps the fabric lay flat.

Create a Folded Cuff

1. Roll the Cuff

  • Turn 3 cm (1 ¼ inches) of the hem to the right side of the shorts to create a neat, rolled cuff.
  • As you flip the cuff upward, you’ll see that the 1 cm (⅜ inch) inner fold from your hem sits perfectly inside — this gives the cuff a clean, structured finish on the wrong side.

2. Press the Cuff

  • Press the cuff all the way around to set the fold nicely.
  • Repeat the same step on the second leg.

3. Secure the Cuffs

  • Add a few small tacks at the side seams and center seams to keep the cuffs in place while wearing and washing.
  • Give everything one final press.

Your cuffed hem is now finished — clean, sturdy, and stylish!

Add Optional Eyelets for a Drawstring

1. Mark the Placement

  • If you want your shorts to have a drawstring, you can add two eyelets at the center front of the waistband.
  • Mark the positions evenly across the front — usually a couple of centimeters apart, centered on the waistband.
Adding optional eyelets to the waistband of men’s shorts.

2. Attach the Eyelets

  • Apply the eyelets following the instructions on your package (every brand is slightly different).
  • Once the eyelets are installed, your drawstring opening is ready to go.

Sew the Waistband Casing

1. Fold the Waistline

  • Fold the waistband down 4 cm (1 ½ inches) toward the inside of the shorts.
  • Then fold an additional 1 cm (⅜ inch) under to hide the raw edge.
  • Pin all around to keep the folds neat and even.

2. Sew the Casing

  • Stitch close to the inner folded edge to create the waistband channel.
  • Make sure to leave a 5 cm (2 inch) opening — this will be used for inserting the elastic later.

3. Press the Waistband

  • Give the waistband a quick press so the casing lies flat and looks clean.

Insert the Elastic

1. Cut the Elastic

  • Measure your waist (or the wearer’s waist) and cut the elastic to that length.
  • If you prefer a snugger fit, cut it slightly shorter.

2. Thread the Elastic

Threading elastic through the waistband of handmade men’s shorts.
  • Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and guide it through the waistband casing.
  • Make sure the other end doesn’t slip inside — hold it or pin it to the fabric as you work your way around.

3. Join the Ends

  • Overlap the two ends of the elastic by about 2–3 cm (1 inch).
  • Stitch them securely together using a zigzag stitch for strength.

4. Close the Opening

Finished elastic waistband on DIY men’s shorts with neat stitching.
  • Pull the elastic fully into the casing.
  • Sew the waistband opening closed with a neat, straight stitch.

Secure the Elastic (Anti-Twist Step)

To prevent the elastic from twisting inside the waistband over time:

  • Stretch the waistband evenly.
  • Sew one or two straight lines through all layers (yes, including the elastic)
    • either along the side seams, or
    • all the way around the full circumference of the waistband.

This keeps everything in place and makes the shorts more comfortable to wear.

And that’s it — your handmade mens shorts are officially ready to wear! They’re comfy, practical, and fully DIY from start to finish.

FAQ – Sewing Mens Shorts

1. Is this mens shorts pattern suitable for beginners?

This tutorial is designed for advanced beginners, but a motivated beginner can absolutely try it too. If you follow the step-by-step photos and the video tutorial, you’ll be fine. Take it slowly, read each step, and don’t skip pressing – it makes a huge difference to the final look.

2. What kind of fabric works best for these shorts?

Light to medium-weight woven fabrics work best: cotton twill, linen blends, chambray, light denim, or cotton poplin. Avoid very stretchy knits for this pattern. Always pre-wash your fabric so it doesn’t shrink after you sew.

3. Can I make these shorts from old bedsheets or upcycled fabric?

Yes, definitely! Upcycling is very Sparrow Refashion. A cotton or linen bedsheet, tablecloth, or curtain can work beautifully, as long as the fabric is still strong and not see-through. Just check for worn areas and avoid cutting pattern pieces there.

4. How do I choose the right size?

Use the body measurements in the size chart and choose the size based on the waist and hip. If you’re between sizes, it’s usually safer to size up and adjust the elastic for a snug fit.

5. Can I add both elastic and a drawstring?

Yes! The waistband is designed for elastic, and you can add eyelets at the center front for a drawstring too. This gives extra adjustability and a sporty, casual look.

6. Are there pockets? Can I skip them?

The pattern includes practical side pockets (because everyone loves pockets!). If you’re a total beginner or want a faster sew, you can skip the pockets and sew the side seams straight.
