12 Free Fall Sewing Patterns You’ll Actually Wear

20 August 2026

Fall is probably my favorite season for sewing because you can suddenly do so much more with the same patterns.

A simple skirt looks completely different in corduroy. A summer dress can stay in your wardrobe with a thin sweater underneath. And once the weather gets colder, I finally have an excuse to sew all the cozy things again.

I also don’t think you need to sew an entirely new wardrobe every season.

A few really wearable pieces that work together are much more useful.

So for this list, I went through my own sewing patterns and picked the ones I would actually use to build a handmade fall wardrobe — skirts, dresses, pants, layering basics, sweaters and jackets.

Most of them are beginner-friendly, and all of the patterns below are free.

I also added some ideas for changing the fabric or styling them for cooler weather, because sometimes that is honestly all you need to turn a summer pattern into a fall one.

If dresses are at the top of your sewing list, I’ve also gathered my 12 free fall dress sewing patterns in one place, with fabric suggestions and ideas for wearing them with boots, cardigans, and your favorite fall layers.

You definitely don’t need to make all twelve.

Pick two or three that work with clothes you already own, and suddenly you have a lot more outfits than you might expect.

1. Four-Tier Skirt With Pockets

White tiered maxi skirt styled for fall with a rust cardigan and boots

See the free Four-Tier Skirt pattern here.

This is one of my newest patterns, and I think it might be even prettier for fall than for summer.

The skirt has four tiers, lining and – very important – pockets.

For warmer weather I like lighter fabrics, but for fall I would try something with just a little more weight.

Think:

  • soft cotton
  • chambray
  • lightweight denim
  • brushed cotton
  • fine corduroy

Pair it with a fitted T-shirt while the weather is still warm, then add tights, boots and a sweater later in the season.

This is also a really nice pattern if you love skirts but don’t want something fitted around the hips.

The free pattern comes in 10 sizes, so you can download it and start sewing without drafting anything yourself.

2. Quilted Jacket

Beige quilted jacket styled with a green skort and lace-up boots for fall

See the free Quilted Jacket pattern here.

If you make only one bigger project from this list, I would seriously consider the quilted jacket.

It’s exactly the kind of thing I want once mornings start getting cold but it’s still too early for a heavy winter coat.

You can wear it over:

  • a dress
  • a T-shirt
  • a sweater
  • a hoodie
  • wide-leg pants

Which is why I love patterns like this, one project suddenly works with half your wardrobe.

The pattern has a relaxed fit, pockets and different closure options, and there is also a video tutorial if you prefer watching the construction instead of only reading instructions.

This one would also look beautiful made from a vintage quilt or quilted fabric with a more unusual print.

3. Easy Skort

Get the free Skort sewing pattern here.

Don’t put your skort pattern away just because summer is ending.

Make the same design from a different fabric and it becomes a completely different piece.

For fall I would use:

  • lightweight corduroy
  • denim
  • cotton twill

Then wear it with tights, loafers or ankle boots.

I especially like this idea for early fall when it is cold in the morning and somehow warm again by the afternoon.

And because it looks like a skirt but has shorts underneath, it is much easier to actually wear in everyday life.

The free PDF includes 10 sizes.

4. Sleeveless Midi Dress

See my free Sleeveless Midi Dress pattern here.

This is technically one of my summer patterns, but I wouldn’t stop wearing it when summer ends.

Sleeveless dresses are actually some of the easiest pieces to layer.

Try it with:

Early fall:
T-shirt + dress + sneakers

Cooler days:
Thin turtleneck + dress + boots

Later fall:
Cardigan + dress + tights + ankle boots

You can also throw the quilted jacket from this list over it.

And this is exactly why I like sewing simple patterns instead of very seasonal clothes — you can keep changing how you wear them.

The dress has pockets, waist ties and a relaxed shape, and the free PDF comes in 8 sizes.

5. Easy Basic Dress

Get the free Basic Dress pattern here.

If you are newer to sewing clothes, start here.

This is one of those patterns that doesn’t look complicated but can turn into a lot of different dresses depending on the fabric.

Make it from a lighter knit for September.

Use a slightly heavier jersey or ponte for October.

Add tights, boots and a cardigan when it gets colder.

You can also change the length or sleeves and make the same basic pattern again without it looking like exactly the same dress.

That is one of my favorite things about simple patterns.

They give you room to play.

6. Kimono Sleeve Dress

Floral midi dress layered with a handmade rust cardigan for cooler fall weather

See the free Kimono Sleeve Dress pattern here.

If sleeves scare you a little, you might really like this dress.

Kimono-style sleeves make the construction much less intimidating than sewing a traditional set-in sleeve.

It is comfortable, easy to layer and you can make it in different lengths.

For fall I would choose a fabric that has some movement but isn’t extremely thin.

A darker floral would be beautiful too. And if you want something with a little more sleeve drama, my new brown gingham puff sleeve smock dress is another lovely fall option. It has a relaxed fit, gathered midi skirt, pockets, and a free PDF pattern.

You don’t have to suddenly start wearing brown just because it is September.

Although…I do love brown in fall.

7. Cozy Sweater

Download my free Sweater pattern here.

Now we are getting into the really cozy part of the list.

This sweater is one of those projects that makes sewing your own clothes feel very practical.

You can use:

  • French terry
  • sweatshirt fleece
  • sweater knit
  • other comfortable stretch fabrics

And depending on what you choose, it can look completely different.

A soft neutral sweater becomes an everyday basic.

A bright knit makes the whole outfit.

A heavier sweatshirt fabric turns it into something you will probably live in from October until spring.

There is a free pattern in 8 sizes plus a video tutorial.

8. Beginner Knit Dress

See the free Beginner Knit Dress pattern here.

This is the dress I would choose when I want to be comfortable but still look like I actually got dressed.

Knit dresses are so easy to wear in fall.

Add:

tights + ankle boots + coat

and you are basically done.

You can also layer a cardigan over it or wear the quilted jacket from earlier in this list.

If you normally avoid sewing knit fabrics, this is also a good project to practice on because the shape is fairly simple.

9. Pullover Hoodie

Get the free Hoodie sewing pattern here.

Not every fall outfit needs to be cute little skirts and boots.

Sometimes I just want a hoodie.

This pattern has a relaxed fit, hood, cuffs and a kangaroo pocket, so it is the kind of project you can actually wear all the time.

Use sweatshirt fleece for something warm or French terry if you want a lighter version for early fall.

It is also a unisex design, which makes it a nice pattern if you want to sew something for someone else.

Or accidentally make one for someone else and then keep it.

That also works.

10. Basic T-Shirt

Download the free T-Shirt sewing pattern here.

A T-shirt might sound like a strange thing to include in a fall sewing list.

But hear me out.

A good basic T-shirt is probably one of the most useful things you can sew for layering.

Wear it under:

  • the quilted jacket
  • cardigan
  • hoodie
  • sweater

You can also make several versions in colors that work with the rest of your fall wardrobe.

This is especially useful if you are trying to sew more outfits instead of sewing individual pieces that never seem to match anything.

11. Wide-Leg Culottes

See the free Wide-Leg Culottes pattern here.

Wide-leg pants work surprisingly well for fall.

The secret is really the fabric.

Instead of very lightweight summer linen, try:

  • cotton twill
  • soft denim
  • heavier viscose
  • lightweight wool blend
  • fine corduroy

Add loafers, boots or sneakers and a tucked-in sweater.

They are comfortable but still look a little more put together than sweatpants, which is always useful.

The free PDF comes in 8 sizes and there is a full sewing tutorial too.

12. Easy Cardigan

Get my free Cardigan sewing pattern here.

I had to include a cardigan because this is probably the easiest way to keep wearing half your summer clothes into fall.

Put it over the sleeveless midi dress.

Wear it with the skort.

Layer it over the T-shirt.

Throw it over the knit dress.

Suddenly four patterns from this post work together.

You can also change the fabric depending on how warm you want it to be.

French terry makes a casual version, while sweater knit gives it a softer and more traditional cardigan look.

Prefer a shorter button-front layer? I also have a free boxy cardigan sewing pattern in 8 sizes. It has a relaxed cropped shape, long sleeves and a clean V-neck front, so it works especially well with high-waisted skirts and pants.

If You Only Want to Sew 5 Pieces

If twelve patterns feels like a lot, I would start with these:

1. T-Shirt
Your basic layering piece.

2. Four-Tier Skirt
Something fun that works with boots, sweaters and jackets.

3. Sweater
Because fall without a sweater feels wrong.

4. Wide-Leg Culottes
For days when you don’t want to wear a dress or skirt.

5. Quilted Jacket
The layer that pulls everything together.

Those five pieces can already create a surprisingly useful little fall wardrobe.

How I Would Choose Fabric for Fall

You do not always need a completely different pattern for every season.

Sometimes changing the fabric is enough.

For example:

A skirt in lightweight cotton feels summery.

The exact same skirt in fine corduroy suddenly feels like October.

A dress in thin viscose works in July.

Make it in ponte or heavier jersey and add tights, and now it works when the weather changes.

For fall sewing I usually look for fabrics with a little more weight and texture.

Good options include:

  • corduroy
  • denim
  • cotton twill
  • ponte knit
  • French terry
  • sweatshirt fleece
  • sweater knit
  • brushed cotton
  • heavier viscose

You can find more of my fabric tips inside the individual tutorials because the best fabric really depends on the pattern.

Build Outfits, Not Just Projects

Fall outfit inspiration with handmade dresses, a tiered skirt, quilted jacket and cardigans

One thing that makes sewing your own clothes much easier is thinking about outfits before cutting the fabric.

Before starting a new project, ask yourself:

What will I wear this with?

For example:

Four-Tier Skirt

  • T-Shirt
  • Sweater
  • Quilted Jacket

or:

Sleeveless Midi Dress

  • Cardigan
  • Boots

or:

Wide-Leg Culottes

  • T-Shirt
  • Hoodie

Suddenly you are not sewing twelve random projects.

You are slowly building one wardrobe.

And that makes it much more likely that you will actually wear the things you spend hours making.

Which Fall Sewing Pattern Should You Start With?

Easy fall sewing projects styled as wearable handmade outfits for cooler weather

If you are completely new to sewing clothes, I would start with the T-shirt, basic dress or sweater.

If you want something that feels a little more special, try the four-tier skirt.

And if you are ready for a bigger project that you can wear again and again, make the quilted jacket.

Personally, I love that you don’t have to choose between practical and pretty with fall sewing.

You can make something cozy, add pockets, choose a fabric you really love and end up with a piece that actually fits into your everyday wardrobe.

That is always my goal with my patterns.

Not clothes that only look nice in a photo.

Clothes you finish sewing…and then keep reaching for.

If you make one of these patterns, I would love to know which one you picked.

And if you are still looking for your next project, have a look through my other free sewing patterns too.

There is a very good chance you will leave with another project added to your sewing list.

Which, if you sew, you probably already know is never actually a bad thing.

I create sewing patterns, refashion projects, and practical tutorials designed to make sewing feel less intimidating and more creative. Most of what you see here starts with something I wanted to wear, remake, or figure out for myself, then I turn the process into a tutorial you can try too.
