What You Need
- Fabric: You can use any fabric that has a good drape and is easy to sew, such as cotton, linen, silk, rayon, or jersey.
- Top pattern: You can use any blouse or top pattern that you like, as long as it fits your measurements and has a waistline. You can also use a basic bodice pattern and modify it to your liking.
- Skirt pattern: You can use the skirt pattern that I provide in this tutorial, or use your own skirt pattern that has a waistband. The skirt pattern that I provide is available in several lengths and two styles: A-line and straight skirt.
- Sewing machine and tools: You will need a sewing machine, scissors, pins, measuring tape, iron, and thread.
- A drafting paper and tracing pattern
You will also need a magnetic seam guide or a magnet to help you sew evenly.
What Fabrics are the Best for your Skirtes and Dresses
You have the freedom to choose any fabric that drapes well and is simple to sew, like cotton, linen, silk, rayon, or jersey. Approximately 2 meters of fabric will be required for both the bodice and the skirt, and an additional meter for the ruffles and pockets, if you want to ad them. To make your dress even more distinctive and fashionable, you can experiment with mixing and matching fabrics for the bodice and skirt, or incorporate various details and embellishments.
How to Measure Yourself to Find Best Size for Your Skirt
To find your size for skirt , you need to measure your waist and hips, and add some ease for comfort and fit.
Here you can see where to measure your waist
and hips.
Check out my detailed post on how to measure yourself.
How to Choose and Find Your Size for Skirt Pattern
Measure your waist and hips as upper, and write down the measurements.
- Add 2 cm ease to your hip measurement, and divide it by 4. This is your 1/4 hip measurement. For example, if your hip measurement is 98 cm, your 1/4 hip measurement is 25 cm (98 + 2 = 100, 100 / 4 = 25).
- Add 2 cm ease to your waist measurement, and divide it by 4. This is your 1/4 waist measurement. For example, if your waist measurement is 68 cm, your 1/4 waist measurement is 17.5 cm (68 + 2 = 70, 70 / 4 = 17.5).
You can adjust the width of your skirt and dress according to the model you choose. For example, if you want a more fitted skirt, you can reduce the ease or add darts. If you want a more loose skirt, you can increase the ease or add pleats.

Seam Allowance
One important thing to remember when using the pdf patterns is that you need to add some seam allowance to them. Seam allowance is the extra fabric that you need to sew the pieces together.
For this skirt project, I recommend adding 1-1.5 cm | 0.4-0.6 in of seam allowance to all the edges of the pattern pieces. This will give you enough room to stitch the seams without compromising the fit.
You can use a ruler or a tape measure to mark the seam allowance on your fabric. Alternatively, you can use a special sewing tool called a seam gauge, which has markings for different seam allowances.
Adding seam allowance is a simple but essential step in sewing. It will ensure that your bustier turns out the right size and shape.
