In this post, you will learn how to sew a wrap maxi skirt step by step

If you’re looking for the perfect summer skirt project that’s comfy, breezy, and beginner-friendly — you’re in the right place! Today I’m sharing how to sew a wrap maxi skirt that’s not only stylish but also super easy to make, even if you’re just starting out with sewing. This skirt has a flattering fit, ties at the side (hello, trendy details!), and a lovely flow thanks to its long wrap silhouette. It’s the kind of piece you’ll want to wear all summer long — from beach days to evening strolls.

As part of my summer sewing series, I designed this DIY long skirt with ties to be as approachable as possible. Whether you love beginner skirt sewing tutorials or are ready to try your first real clothing project, this one’s for you. In my earlier post, I showed how to draft the pattern step-by-step for the perfect fit — but I totally get that not everyone enjoys pattern making. So in this post, I’ve included a free PDF skirt pattern in 8 sizes for my email subscribers!

Plus, I’m walking you through everything with a friendly, relaxed pace. You’ll find sewing tips, tricks, and even a step-by-step video tutorial to help visual learners follow along with ease. Let’s sew a skirt that feels amazing, fits beautifully, and makes your summer wardrobe shine!

What Is a Wrap Maxi Skirt?

A wrap maxi skirt is a long, flowy skirt that wraps around your waist and ties at the side (or sometimes the back). Instead of zippers or buttons, it stays closed with fabric ties, giving it an adjustable fit that’s super flattering and comfy. It’s called “maxi” because it usually falls around the ankles or lower calves, making it a great choice for summer when you want something breezy, light, and stylish.

This type of wrap skirt is loved for its easy fit, versatility, and timeless look. You can dress it up with heels or wear it casual with sandals or sneakers. It’s also one of the best skirt styles for beginners to sew, since it doesn’t require tricky closures and still looks amazing!

Before we start sewing, let’s make sure you have everything ready to go! Here’s a simple checklist of all the materials and tools you’ll need for this fun summer project. Nothing fancy — just the basics to help you sew your wrap skirt with ease.

Best Fabrics and How Much You Need

Choosing the right fabric can make all the difference when sewing your own wrap maxi skirt. Since this is a long, flowy skirt with a tie closure, you’ll want something that drapes well and feels nice against the skin — especially for summer!

Best Fabrics for a Wrap Maxi Skirt:

  • Lightweight cotton – crisp, breathable, and easy to sew
  • Cotton lawn or voile – soft and slightly sheer, great for hot days
  • Rayon or viscose – amazing drape and flow, perfect for a dressy look
  • Linen blends – cool and textured, with a casual summer vibe
  • Double gauze – soft, airy, and ideal for boho or beachy styles
  • Upcycled bedsheets or tablecloths – affordable, sustainable, and full of character!

Avoid stiff or bulky fabrics like denim or heavy canvas, as they won’t wrap smoothly or hang nicely.

Tip: When sewing slippery fabrics like rayon, use extra pins or sewing clips and go slow so it does not move. Pre-washing all fabrics is important so it does not shrink later.

📏 How Much Fabric Do You Need?

For most sizes (XS–3XL), you’ll need about:

SizeFabric Width (55–60″)Required Fabric
XS–M2.5 yards / 2.3 metersMaxi length skirt
L–3XL3 to 3.5 yards / 2.7–3.2 mMaxi or wider wrap version

🛏️ Sewing with a bedsheet?
A twin-sized sheet usually works great for sizes XS to L. If you’re sewing a larger size or want extra fullness in the wrap, go for a full or queen-sized bedsheet — it’s a budget-friendly option and perfect for summer skirts!

Always pre-wash your fabric before sewing to prevent shrinkage later.

Sewing the Waist Ties – Step-by-Step Guide

To complete your wrap maxi skirt, you’ll need to sew and attach 3 waist ties. These will allow you to comfortably secure the skirt around your waist and adjust the fit.

Cutting the Ties:

Cut 3 fabric straps, each measuring:

  • Length: 50–70 cm (20–27.5 inches)
  • Width: 4 cm (1.5 inches)

Tip: Use the same fabric as your skirt or a matching contrast fabric for a decorative touch.

Attaching the Ties to the Skirt:

  • Pin one strap just below the waist (side of the skirt), unpick a few stitches so you can thread the belt through) with a seam ripper, thread the strap through and pin it, then sew it on
  • To attach the two remaining ties (for internal or decorative wrapping):
  • Carefully open the side seam a few centimeters on one side of the skirt.
  • Slide one of the ties into the opening and pin it on the wrong side of the fabric.
  • Measure 10 cm (4 inches) below the waistband and pin the second tie in the same way.
  • Sew both ties securely into place with a straight stitch, backstitching for durability.
  • Repeat the process on the other side of the skirt:
  • Measure 10 cm down from the waistband.
  • Pin and sew the third tie securely into place.

Tip: Make sure the ties are symmetrical and positioned at the same height on both sides for a balanced, clean look.
