  • Pin the Pattern: Pin the pattern pieces to the fabric, aligning the grainlines correctly. Ensure you have enough fabric for all pieces, including the waistband and pockets.
  • Cut the Fabric: Using sharp scissors or a rotary cutter, carefully cut around the pattern pieces.

Sewing the Shorts

1. Preparing the Slash Pockets

Slash pockets add functionality and style to your shorts. Here’s how to sew them:

  • Cut Pocket Pieces: Using the pocket pattern piece, cut four pieces of fabric.
  • Sew Pocket Edges: Place two pocket pieces right sides together and sew along the curved edge, leaving the straight edges open. Repeat for the other two pieces.
  • Attach Pockets to Shorts: Place the pocket pieces on the front shorts pieces, right sides together, and sew along the pocket opening edge.
  • Press and Topstitch: Turn the pockets to the inside of the shorts and press. Topstitch around the pocket opening for a clean finish.

2. Sewing the Shorts Panels

  • Join Front and Back Panels: Place the front and back shorts pieces right sides together. Pin and sew the side seams using a straight stitch. Finish the raw edges with a zigzag stitch or a serger.

  • Sew the Inseam: Align the front and back inseam edges, pin, and sew. Finish the raw edges.

  • Sew the Crotch Seam: With the shorts inside out, pin and sew the crotch seam from the front waist to the back waist. Finish the raw edges.

3. Creating the Elastic Waistband

  • Prepare the Waistband: Fold the waistband piece in half lengthwise with the wrong sides together. Press.
  • Attach the Waistband: Pin the waistband to the top edge of the shorts, right sides together. Sew around the edge, leaving an opening to insert the elastic.
  • Insert the Elastic: Using a safety pin or bodkin, thread the elastic through the waistband casing. Ensure it lies flat and is evenly distributed.
  • Sew the Elastic Ends: Overlap the elastic ends by about 1 inch and sew them together securely.
  • Close the Opening: Sew the opening in the waistband closed.

Hemming the Shorts

  • Fold and Press: Fold the bottom edge of each leg up by 1/4 inch and press. Fold again by 1/2 inch, press, and pin in place.
