Easy DIY Obi Belt with Bow Ties – Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

Here comes the fun part! This beginner-friendly obi belt sewing tutorial is perfect if you’re looking for a stylish accessory that’s easy to make. The belt is sewn in layers and beautifully finished with clean edges and neat topstitching.

🧵 Step 1: Cut Out All Fabric Pieces

From your leftover materials, cut out the following:

Cutting fabric pieces for the DIY obi belt
  • 1x center belt piece (outer layer)
  • 1x middle belt piece (lining layer)
  • 1x interlining piece (same shape as the lining)
  • 4x binding strips for the bow ties

✂️ Pro tip: If your fabric is very lightweight, consider joining the outer layer and lining together for more structure.

🔥 Step 2: Fuse the Interfacing to Add Structure

Iron the interfacing onto the wrong side of the outer center belt piece.

Fusing the interfacing for obi belt
  • Use steam or a damp cloth to help the interfacing bond more effectively.

🎀 Step 3: Attach the Bow Ties to the Belt Ends

Now it’s time to attach the ties that will let you wrap the corset-style obi belt around your waist and finish it with a beautiful bow.

How to Pin and Sew the Ties:
Attaching and sewing the fabric ties to the belt ends
  • Lay the interfaced outer belt piece right side up.
  • Place two tie straps at the short ends, raw edges aligned and pointing towards the center.
  • Pin or clip the ties in place.
  • Baste or stitch them down using a 0.5 cm (¼ inch) seam allowance.

✅ Sewing Tip: Make sure the ties aren’t twisted before sewing. Once turned right side out, they should extend cleanly for easy tying.

🔄 Step 4: Repeat with the Lining

Attaching and sewing the lining to the obi belt
  • Lay the lining belt piece right side up.
  • Pin and baste the remaining two tie straps to each end, raw edges aligned and pointing inward.

After sewing, give both the main and lining belt pieces a good press with your iron.

🧷 Step 5: Assemble the Outer Belt and Lining Together

Now you’ll sew the main outer piece and lining together, with all ties enclosed neatly inside.

How to Align and Pin:
  • Place the outer belt piece right side up.
  • Lay the lining piece on top, right sides facing.
  • Make sure all ties are tucked inside between the layers.
  • Pin all around the edges, aligning the long and short sides.
Leave a Turning Gap:
  • Mark a 7–10 cm (3–4 inch) section on one long edge (preferably the bottom).
  • Don’t sew this part! You’ll need it to turn the belt right side out later.

🪡 Step 6: Sew Around the Belt

  • Sew all the way around the belt using a 1 cm (⅜ inch) seam allowance.
  • Backstitch at the beginning and end.
  • Leave your marked gap open.
  • Sew slowly around corners or curves for a clean finish.

Sewing Tip: If your fabric is bulky, reduce presser foot pressure and increase stitch length to around 2.8–3.0 mm for smoother seams.

✂️ Step 7: Trim Seams and Shape the Corners

(Optional but recommended)

Triming seams and shape corners for obi belt
  • Trim any excess seam allowance, especially at corners.
  • Clip curved seam allowances carefully.
  • Use a point turner, chopstick, or closed scissors to gently shape corners after turning.

🔄 Step 8: Turn the Obi Belt Right Side Out and Press

This part is so satisfying!

Here’s how to reveal your finished belt:
Turning the obi belt right side out after sewing
  • Pull the belt right side out through the turning gap, starting with the ties.
  • Smooth out the fabric gently to avoid straining the seams.
How to Press for a Crisp Look:
  • Lay the belt flat and press it with a steam iron.
  • Fold the raw edges of the turning gap inward and press them in line with the rest of the seam.

Ironing Tip: Use a pressing cloth for delicate or shiny fabrics.

🧵 Step 9: Topstitch the Belt to Finish

Final step! Topstitching gives your DIY obi belt a polished, professional look and closes the turning gap.

Why Topstitching Matters:
  • Secures layers in place
  • Keeps edges crisp
  • Adds a neat decorative detail

How to Topstitch:
  • Set your stitch length to 3.0–3.5 mm.
  • Sew 2–3 mm (⅛ inch) from the belt’s edge, around all sides.
  • As you pass over the turning gap, topstitching will seal it shut.
Topstitching Tips:

Sew slowly, especially at corners or near thick ties. Use matching or contrasting thread depending on your style. Wonder clips or a walking foot can help manage shifting layers.
